York Holiday Reviews

York Minster

The city of York is easily one of the UK's most popular short break destinations. Thousands of visitors flock to see this picturesque city each year for its fascinating history, fabulous shopping and a whole wealth of great attractions too. Our superb range of York hotels offer an ideal retreat after a long day of shopping and sightseeing. The medieval city is compact and easy to explore, the gorgeous York Minster, Clifford's Tower, the famous cobbled street The Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre are all within easy walking distance of most central hotels in York.

  • York Minster sits at the very heart of York and dominates the city skyline. One of Britain's best medieval cathedrals, highlights of the Minster include the spectacular Heart of Yorkshire window, the Norman foundations in the crypt and the 275 step ascent to the top of the tower.
  • Lying just a short drive from the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, York provides the perfect base to explore stunning North Yorkshire scenery. Walk the North Sea coast from Filey to Scarborough or tackle Yorkshire's three peaks near Skipton.
  • York boasts a thriving food and drink culture which includes many fine restaurants, bars, pubs and cafes. Try Skosh's small plates or street food in the Shambles Market. A hotbed of the craft beer revolution, York has two breweries within the city walls in Brew York and York Brewery, a visit to their taprooms is not to be missed.
Our York hotels benefit from great transport links and the city is an excellent choice for a rail break. Ideally placed on the high speed East Coast Mainline, York is a mere two hours from London and only two and a half hours from Edinburgh. A city with a proud heritage, the terrific National Railway Museum is one of York's busiest attractions or, to add something extra to your stay, be sure to take a scary York Ghost Walk for a short break with a difference.

Weekend in York

Stay Date: 07/09/07, a customer who stayed at 4* Novotel York Centre in York wrote this review.

Spent two very busy days in York, sightseeing. It was a wonderful place with plenty to see and do, the only draw back was that after a long tiring day sightseeing it would have been nice to return See More  Read more information to our hotel and have a good nights rest, however, this was not the case as the hotel catered for wedding receptions, therefore there was the noise from the disco, but more annoying and noisy than thatwas the groups of people congregating at the front of the hotel (under our bedroom window) smoking and obviously chatting loudly until the early hours of the morning, this happened on both nights ofour stay. The smoking ban is a good idea, however, allowing guests to smoke outside the hotel reception, is not taking into consideration all the other guests that have paid for a room and thereforedeserve to be able to sleep in it, in peace and quiet.   Collapse  Hide

Food in restaurant very mediocre- luke warm & uninspiring. Dirty linen & crockery outside bedroom doors when we checked in at 2:15 pm! Lovely but Hot!

Stay Date: 30/08/08, a customer who stayed at 3* Best Western Crown Hotel in Boroughbridge wrote this review.

Stayed one night in this local (ish) hotel for a treat and to pamper ourselves with the fabulous swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room. Our room was very nice, comfy bed, large, clean and See More  Read more information good sized bathroom. Unfortunately it was absolutely boiling all the time we were there. The heating was not on and the window did not allow much air through. We discovered next morning that our room(No. 80) was located directly above the sauna and leisure facilities and this could only be the source of the heat. We pointed this out to the staff on checking out who said that the leisure club waswell ventilated and insulated so it was not possible. However we disagree (unless they have got a ghost in that room that gives off vast amounts of heat!) The temperature must have been at least 40degrees C and the difference as soon as you stepped out into the corridor was incredible. As soon as you entered the room it was like getting off a plane in the Med! Other than no sleep due to the constantheat of the sauna the hotel was great and to be recommended-just stay away from room 80!   Collapse  Hide

York And The Northern Belle.

Stay Date: 13/02/09, a customer from Doncaster who stayed at 5* The Principal York in York wrote this review.

A great day out around Yorkshire on The Northern Belle. Excellent food and Service in good pleasant surroundings. This was followed by a Visit to The Royal York Hotel. The overnight stay was spoilt See More  Read more information by a member of the environmental waste disposal contractors that serve the hotel, who at 6.41am in the morning decided to beat a large metal wheeled bin back into shape using a large sledge hammer. This really did spoil our night. Other than that all was as you would expect.   Collapse  Hide

Paid For Location

Stay Date: 16/04/09, a customer from Fife who stayed at 3* The Queens Hotel (Including Dinner) in York wrote this review.

recently stayed at the Queens hotel in york. The location was perfect but the hotel was far from it. Took my husband and family on a half board basis to york for 2 days. Our room overlooked the See More  Read more information front door and the single bed pull outs were matresses on casters which was really hard going on our kids as they are very tall teenagers. this was not what we expected at all. The evening meal menu readwell but the meals ;ooked as thogh they were pre plated and heated up. The price we paid for the 2 nights was way above what it should have been for the standard of this hotel, and they are obviouslytaking advantage of its prime location.   Collapse  Hide
