York Holiday Reviews

York Minster

The city of York is easily one of the UK's most popular short break destinations. Thousands of visitors flock to see this picturesque city each year for its fascinating history, fabulous shopping and a whole wealth of great attractions too. Our superb range of York hotels offer an ideal retreat after a long day of shopping and sightseeing. The medieval city is compact and easy to explore, the gorgeous York Minster, Clifford's Tower, the famous cobbled street The Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre are all within easy walking distance of most central hotels in York.

  • York Minster sits at the very heart of York and dominates the city skyline. One of Britain's best medieval cathedrals, highlights of the Minster include the spectacular Heart of Yorkshire window, the Norman foundations in the crypt and the 275 step ascent to the top of the tower.
  • Lying just a short drive from the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, York provides the perfect base to explore stunning North Yorkshire scenery. Walk the North Sea coast from Filey to Scarborough or tackle Yorkshire's three peaks near Skipton.
  • York boasts a thriving food and drink culture which includes many fine restaurants, bars, pubs and cafes. Try Skosh's small plates or street food in the Shambles Market. A hotbed of the craft beer revolution, York has two breweries within the city walls in Brew York and York Brewery, a visit to their taprooms is not to be missed.
Our York hotels benefit from great transport links and the city is an excellent choice for a rail break. Ideally placed on the high speed East Coast Mainline, York is a mere two hours from London and only two and a half hours from Edinburgh. A city with a proud heritage, the terrific National Railway Museum is one of York's busiest attractions or, to add something extra to your stay, be sure to take a scary York Ghost Walk for a short break with a difference.

Short Break in York

Stay Date: 14/01/07, a customer who stayed at 5* The Principal York in York wrote this review.

This trip wasn't unfortunately a short break, but a business trip for a whole week. The luxury and comfort of the Royal York hotel was indeed very good; especially it's capabilities to relax after a See More  Read more information stressful working day: the sports center and pool area was great. Due to the business trip I did not have so many oppurtunities to do sightseeing, though York seems to be a very lovely place. Lot'sof historical places and nice, small little houses. A very nice athmosphere which made it even a pleasure to walk through downtown York at night time. The bar and pub scene seems to be very vivid (atleast for such a small city) - I always found good places to have a drink or a meal. A bit disappointing was the shopping situation; shops closing at 5pm is more like in the middle ages - wellsomehow it fits to the athmosphere of this place called York.   Collapse  Hide

Had a truly romantic weekend celebrating our anniversary. Wandered the walls on the day itself and took in the atmosphere around York on the other days. Saw a good exhibition in the Art Gallery and See More  Read more information had a relaxing coffee in their coffee bar. Good prices too! As the Art Gallery is free we were able to wander for a while knowing that we could come back at a later date. The highlight of oursightseeing was going on the Yorkshire Wheel. A new attraction offering fabulous veiws. Also visited the excellent National Railway Museum, a must for us every time we go to York.   Collapse  Hide

North Yorkshire

Stay Date: 11/01/07, a customer from Ashington who stayed at 4* Talbot Malton in Malton (Nr York) wrote this review.

The Talbot Hotel is typical of a certain era. It was almost possible to imagine Agatha Christie relaxing on a comfy sofa in front of a roaring log fire in the lounge. So the glory of a former era is See More  Read more information a little faded, I couldn't have afforded it then now I make the most of it. The area around Malton has a wealth of historical places to visit. My favourite was Riveaux Abbey. The weather was coldand blustery but the absence of crowds made up for that. Also the new cafe, overlooking the magnificent ruins was a fabulous spot to drink a deliciously hot coffee. Malton itself is a lovely town. Wefound some great little shops in a converted theatre. Looking for a drink on a Saturday night, when all the pubs are catering for youth we were directed to Suddabey's which brews it's own beer -as theysay in Yorkshire, "grand"   Collapse  Hide

A Family Day in York

A super weekend in York started with a great lunch in the sumptous surroundings of Pizza Express on Lendal Bridge. My wife and teenage daughter then indulged themselves in a little retail therapy, See More  Read more information particularly enjoying the many small specialist shops that York has. Meanwhile, my younger daughter and I discovered a lovely arts & crafts shop near Bootham Bar where she was able to create her ownteddy bear. The day culminated in a refreshing swim in the hotel followed by an enjoyable evening meal. The next day started with a huge buffet breakfast at the Novotel followed by a visited to theCastle Museum, one of York's best attractions. The whole family enjoyed the experience and after a little more shopping we sadly had to return home after a superb weekend.   Collapse  Hide
