About Hairspray - Dublin

Directed by Paul Kerryson with music by Mark O’Donnell, Hairspray is crammed with toe-tapping tunes, including Welcome to the 60s, You Can’t Stop the Beat and The Nicest Kids in Town, and many, many more. During its time on the West End, the show was nominated for 11 Olivier Awards and took home the coveted title of Best New Musical.

The Story

Set in 1960s Baltimore, Tracy Turnblad is a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, who is determined to follow her dancing dreams. With a successful audition, Tracy soon becomes a local star and sets out to dance on national TV with The Nicest Kids in Town. With all her new-found fame, Tracy uses her time in the spotlight to fight for equality and ends up finding love with local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way.

History of Hairspray - Dublin

Hairspray the Musical first came to the stage on New York’s Broadway in 2002 and opened at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre in 2007, where Michael Ball and Mel Smith starred in the leading roles of Edna - and Wilbur Turnblad. The original 2002 Broadway production was based on the 1988 film starring Ricki Lake. In 2007 a remake of the film starring in 2007 John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken was released, based on the Broadway production.
