About The Ferryman

London's hottest new play, The Ferryman, is wowing critics and audiences alike as it's West End popularity continues. Directed by Sam Mendes, famous as the director of American Beauty, Road to Perdition and Skyfall, and scripted by Jez Butterworth (Jerusalem, The River), The Ferryman tells tale of the past coming back to haunt a Northern Ireland family.

The Story

Northern Ireland, 1981. The Carney farmhouse is a hive of activity with preparations for the annual harvest. A day of hard work on the land and a traditional night of feasting and celebrations lie ahead. But this year they will be interrupted by a visitor.

History of The Ferryman

The Ferryman had its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in London in April 2017 before transferring to the Gielgud Theatre in June. At the 2017 Evening Standard Theatre Awards, The Ferryman was nominated for four awards, winning three for Best Play, Best Director and Best Emerging Talent for Tom Glynn-Carney. The Ferryman's strong ensemble cast also includes Stuart Graham (Hunger, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Charles Dale (Casualty, Coronation Street) and Sarah Greene (Olivier nomination for her role in The Cripple of Inishmaan).

Jez Butterworth’s record-breaking play The Ferryman must end on 19 May 2018 at the Gielgud Theatre. Directed by Sam Mendes, the play premiered at the Royal Court becoming the fastest-selling show in the theatre’s history, receiving unanimous critical acclaim.

Evenings: Monday - Saturday: 7.00pm

Matinees: Wednesday and Saturday: 1.30pm

Running time: Approximately 3 hours plus a 15 minute interval and a few minutes pause between Acts Two and Three.
