Barnstaple itself is one of North Devon's larger towns and historically was the centre of the county’s wool trade which brought great prosperity to the area. A scenic journey takes you into Cornwall and to the edge of the British Isles. Hop on a train to Plymouth from Exeter St David's railway station where you change for Penzance. This line was originally run by the Great Western Railway, founded in 1833, which connected London with the West Country. Engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, The GWR was famed as the "Holiday Line" taking many people to resorts in Devon and Cornwall from the capital. Penzance is the major tourist centre of West Cornwall, overlooking Mounts Bay and the iconic St. Michael's Mount. Penzance enjoys a temperate climate and flowers and palm trees abound in the town providing a blaze of colour throughout the year. The craggy coastline around Penzance features beautiful beaches, quaint fishing villages and cliff-top walks. The area’s dark history of smuggling and wrecking influence the local culture to this day.Read more
