Oxford Area Holiday Reviews

View of All Souls College, Oxford

Book a hotel in Oxford and see that there's so much more here than just the University. A visit to Oxford means that you get to shop at the covered market, visit the world renowned Modern Art Museum or stroll through the Universities botanical gardens for a stonewalled haven of peace in the bustling city.

However, if you are booking hotels in Oxford, then it would be a crime for you not to see the University. Christ Church College is not far from most hotels, but it offers some of the most picturesque architecture in the country. The college has served as a movie set for films such as Brideshead revisited and Harry Potter. Whilst in the city centre, why not take a trip along the Thames via one of the many punting stations, before heading back to your Oxford Hotel and changing before hitting the cities restaurants and pubs.

Whilst Oxford is not the largest city, there are a number of attractions that will be within a short distance of your hotel. Nearby Woodstock offers the magnificent Blenheim Palace. Built in 1704 for the John Churchill, The Duke of Marlborough, it was named after his recent victory in Blenheim. At Woodstock you can also find the elegant St. Mary Magdalene Church. The charming medieval market of Witney and the picturesque countryside of the Cotswolds are also close by. For that idyllic Cotswold market town, why not visit Burford, which has one of the best 'wool' churches in the country.

So you can see that Oxford has a lot more to offer than just a University, so why not book a hotel in Oxford today and see what this city and the Cotswolds have to offer.

Stopover near Oxford

Stay Date: 17/05/18, a customer aged 65+ from Sudbury who stayed at 3* Best Western Plus Magnolia Park Golf and Country Club in Nr Oxford wrote this review.

We used this hotel to break our journey home to Suffolk from Tetbury. We had a nice spacious room with all the usual facilities including Hairdryer (although no plug near a mirror, Safe, flat screen See More  Read more information TV (No Sky Sports, you needed to go to the bar for that), Coffee and Tea and an empty fridge. The bed was very comfortable and we had a first floor room with a small balcony and view over the golfcourse. We ate a snack in the Bar, which is actually the golf bar. The food was good but the actual bar itself was a little tired and in need of refurbishment. We were down to breakfast just before 9am(breakfast was available until 10am) and were advised to order from the menu rather than use the hot buffet which we were told would be a little dry. We both had Eggs Royale which was excellent.Obviously, the cereal and cold buffet items were fine.   Collapse  Hide

Ladies reunion in Oxford

Stay Date: 20/04/18, a customer aged 45-64 from United Kingdom who stayed at 4* Oxford Spires Hotel in Oxford wrote this review.

Good welcome from the hotel on arrival, the room wasn't ready as we were early, but the checking in was completed. We were unpleasantly surprised though that we had to pay to park at the hotel. The See More  Read more information location was great and we were able to walk into Oxford easily along the Thames footpath. There was a good choice of breakfast foods but sadly I thought the cooked choice was not hot enoughespecially the fried eggs which were indeed cold, not even cool. I suspect they were pre-cooked and stored in the fridge. Unfortunately as it was very busy they didn't have long enough on the hot plate to bereheated. The terrace was pleasant to sit out on in the sun and all areas clean and tidy. We didn't expect 2 fire alarms; hope the culprit was fined if it was due to smoking in their room! I wouldreturn to the hotel.   Collapse  Hide

Weekend break in Oxford

Stay Date: 05/03/16, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Oxford Spires Hotel (2 Night Offer & 1st Night Dinner) in Oxford wrote this review.

Our SuperBreak included rail travel. Everything worked out very smoothly. Train on time, taxi from hotel picked us up within minutes of arriving at 10.30 am. Hotel staff at Oxford Pillars very See More  Read more information friendly and helpful. Allowed us to leave our bags before booking in so we could walk into Oxford along the Thames Path, which was easily accessible from the hotel. Our twin-bedded room was large andspacious, with a sofa, chair and large TV. Beds were comfy. There were two private events at the hotel Saturday evening so bedroom doors did not stop slamming until quite late. However we watched a latemovie so did not bother us too much. Breakfast was good, plenty of choice for every taste. We enjoyed used the swimming pool and steam room before having dinner on the Sunday evening. The swimming poolwas nice and liked the fact that there were individual changing booths in the changing rooms. There was no machine to spin dry our swimming costumes but this was not a problem as dried them on theradiator in our bathroom. Our break allowed us a free 3 course dinner which impressed us. The menu was varied and we thoroughly enjoyed our main course of the Lamb Special. Before leaving Monday morningwe had another walk along the Thames Path. Reception ordered us a taxi and it was waiting for us on our return to take us to the Railway Station for the 10.28 train which again ran on time! The wholebreak ran so smoothly and we think it was fantastic value for what we had. During our stay we visited the Oxford Castle/Prison which was very interesting and entertaining. We went next door afterwardsand had tea in Malmaison so we could have a look round this very dark and intriguing hotel. We enjoyed visiting the Ashmolean museum and had a very nice rye bread sandwich in the cafe. The highlightwas visiting the Christchurch College - I loved the great hall which was used in the Harry Potter films. Thank you SuperBreak.   Collapse  Hide

Oxford weekend break

Stay Date: 16/10/15, a customer aged 25-44 from Cambridgehire who stayed at 4* Oxford Spires Hotel (2 Night Offer & 1st Night Dinner) in Oxford wrote this review.

I specifically asked for a quiet room as I am a light sleeper. The room was at the back of the hotel overlooking fields and was wonderfully peaceful. Bathroom could do with updating as the counter See More  Read more information was marked, shower was difficult to control - temperature was either too hot or too cold and did vary during use so could suddenly be very hot indeed! No air conditioning, but control of radiators socould manage the room temperature quite well, but this was October, might be different during the warmer summer. Plenty of choice at breakfast and all was nice, although the scrambled eggs on the firstmorning looked like they were swimming in cream - better on the second morning. Was disappointed with the evening meal. The restaurant is trying to be quite fancy, and not quite hitting the mark andI found it difficult to find something that sounded appealing. Fish and chips arrived in a frying basket, form over function. Other diners ordered the southern fried chicken which arrived on a longthin board - and then minutes later was brought a plate as you can't eat it off the board. What is wrong with serving food on plates? I can't have spicy food so requested that the the chilli relish beleft off my burger - this was somehow relayed to the kitchen as with nothing - all I got was the meat patty and a toasted burger bun, No salad, no mayo, no pickles and was, again, served on a board (myown pet hate). The waiter did not ask if we wanted anything else such as sauces, and I discovered the plainness of my burger after he had left the table. No-one came to check if the meal was OK, andno servers came anywhere near our table so I could request anything. Had baked apple for pud, the filling was nutty and yummy and the cinnamon ice cream was lush. The apple was well over-baked as ithad shrunken considerably and looked wizened - the skin was very leathery and not pleasant to eat.   Collapse  Hide

Good hotel stay, we have stayed here a number of times and like the hotel for the location as it is easy to walk into town along the riverside. Hotel room very well maintained, clean and See More  Read more information comfortable. Disappointed with shower in room as not very powerful but the bathroom was spotless. Great food in the restaurant, ate here on both nights of our stay. The open top bus tour of the city is great wayto find out about Oxford and to get your bearings. Brilliant as you can get on and off at places that interest you. Oxford Randolph Hotel great for afternoon tea and the covered market and Oxfordcastle are worth a visit as are the many colleges and grounds and the Ashmolean museum.   Collapse  Hide

Thoroughly enjoyed stay, after getting over disappointment of room, even though I knew we were in a budget room I was shocked as have stayed in many De Vere hotels and all have been of a good See More  Read more information standard. However the view from window was beautiful, I had asked for a quiet room with view. The signs around the hotel are a little confusing to say the least but we enjoyed exploring this wonderful oldbuilding and the contrast between the original building and the newer Crown Plaza. Hotel looks fantastic and main areas are fabulous. Bedrooms very small and cramped and some need updating. Scheme in place to do this but its taking a long time. First room we were offered had See More  Read more information been updated but overlooked the bins at the back of the hotel and as there was no air conditioning had to open windows - area outside was disgusting so asked to be moved to a quieter room. Did not use shower as we went to the Spa & Golf club which is part of the complex and used theirfacilities instead. Rooms are noisy as the walls are paper-thin and we could hear children crying and couples coming and going very early in the morning. Used by overseas tourists on coach trips andchildren who were allowed to run riot as they didn't seem to have many adults supervising them.. Will not be returning to this hotel.   Collapse  Hide

Fabulous Stay at Heythrop Hall

Having read many poor reviews about Heythrop Park De Veres Venues Hotel we were a little worried about going but I have to say we had a fabulous stay there. Yes there is refurbishment going on as See More  Read more information the place was a little run down but this did not disturb us at all. Shrewsbury Wing is having a complete overhaul but we stayed in room S203 and it was lovely. Evening meal in the Brassey Restaurant wasfantastic, Hotel staff were lovely too. I would definitely recommend a visit and would urge people to book a package for bed, breakfast and first night evening meal as it is very good value that way.it will work out far more expensive doing it directly with the hotel itself. Just one downside - we attempted to do one of the "signed" walks (the orange 2 mile one) and got completely lost. Therewas not enough sign posts and at times it was very confusing - we ended up walking right across the golf course. A few more signposts and it would be much easier, although we did have a lovely walk.   Collapse  Hide

The staff could not keep up with customers to re set tables and bring in glasses and cups and serve drinks. Slight improvement the second morning butI have had better hot buffets in Premier Inn! Great Weekend in Oxford

Tea and coffee making facilities. Very good breakfast selection and a lovely evening mealon the first night ( included in the 2day package) I would recommend the hotel to others and would happily return. Oxford centre has wonderful buildings, do o miss the Bodleian library. Had pre-bookedsunset picnic trip on the river with Oxford Cruises, unfortunately it was rainy and rather cold. Picnic was a pre-plated salad, nice but not what we expected. Only four on the trip and not sure howmuch more enjoyable it would have been if the sun was out. Glad it was a gift as I would have been disappointed if I had paid the ?45 per person . The hotel was poorly signposted both within its own grounds and within the hotel (three attempts before we found main reception). Our room was on the 1st floor along seemingly endless corridors. See More  Read more information Cleanliness was very good everywhere, staff generally very friendly. Breakfast was ok if you like unintentionally chewy food. Dinner was fine as it was included within the package 1st night, but we wouldhave been disappointed had we paid for it separately, as the quality did not justify the cost, in our opinion. The hotel describes itself as being a short stroll to the city centre; it would be moreaccurate to say that it is a 15-20 minute walk to the outskirts of the centre, but once reached there are plenty of different directions to head for, depending on what you are after. Even with the useof a map we became very lost, which is a good way of exploring a city, but not ideal if walking is not your strong point. The downside was that the location was a little out of the way and the hotel overall was very tired once you gotthrough the reception area and beautiful lobby. The rooms, although clean, are extremely small, tired, very little storage and do not do the hotel justice. You'd expect a lot more looking at the hotel from the outside.
