York Early Music Christmas Festival
Date Posted: 03/09/14
The city of York is getting its party hat on in anticipation of the festive season, with the charming town set to host its York Early Music Christmas Festival 2014 from the end of this week (December 5th).
Locals and visitors alike will no doubt be absolutely thrilled by what's on offer, with a plethora of successful artists and musicians performing a number of warm Christmas classics that will get everyone in the festive spirit nicely.
From well-known Yuletide numbers including The Christmas Hearth and A Hymn of the Nativity to classical favourites such as Vivaldi, the variety of classical music on offer here is unparalleled.
Among the highlights, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment will present an evening of baroque chamber music including works by Henry Purcell which is perfect for a cold winter's evening on December 12th.
Medieval, folk and world music specialists Joglaresa will wow with a sparkling subversion of suitably Christmassy classics from days gone by, including serenades from the Tudor period that will be celebrated on December 8th with ale and alcohol.
Also well-worth attending is the Yorkshire Bach Choir and Yorkshire Baroque Soloists, who will team up for a performance of Handel's Messiah on December 6th. Peter Seymour will conduct.
Administrative director of the York Early Music Christmas Festival Delma Tomlin added that he is especially looking forward to this year's production, and had a few of his own highlights to add.
"We couldn't have wished for a more joyous start to the Christmas Festival than La Serenissima's glorious Vivaldi programme The Red Priest," he commented.
The concerts take place between December 5th and the 14th, with Sile Antico rounding off the Christmas programme with A Wondrous Mystery in traditional German style with carols and motets. Various venues include St Olave's Church, Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall and the St Michael le Belfrey Church. Attendees are advised to check the website for a full programme.
