Wicked star joins Women on the Verge

Willemijn Verkaik is the latest name to be attached to the forthcoming West End production of Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown, which is due to burst onto the West End theatre scene this January.

The international theatrical songstress, who has performed in multiple languages across the world in various productions, will join previously announced stars Tamsin Greig, Haydn Gwynne, Jérôme Pradon and Anna Skellern in the adaptation.

Other newly-announced cast members include Ricardo Afonso, who has previously appeared in Thriller Live, We Will Rock You and Top Hat, and Haydn Oakley, whose numerous West End credits include The Book Of Mormon, Lend Me A Tenor: The Musical, Spamalot and We Will Rock You.

Verkaik is particularly renowned for her portrayal of Elphaba in the musical Wicked, a role that she first performed in Germany before taking it to the Netherlands. She then performed as Elphaba on Broadway before coming to the West End, where she was forced to cut her run short due to back surgery.

Women on the Verge is based on Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar-nominated film about a girl called Pepa, who sees her life unravel when her lover leaves her for another woman. The score for the new production is written by David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane, and the action is directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher.

For those interested in securing tickets, Woman on the Verge opens for previews at the Playhouse Theatre on December 16th, officially opening January 12th. The leading cast will be joined by a company including Marianne Benedict, Holly James, Michael Matus, Rebecca McKinnis, Sarah Moyle, Alastair Natkiel, Nuno Queimado and Dale Rapley.
