Wicked adds performances for Christmas

The West End and Broadway blockbuster Wicked is showing no signs of slowing down, having added a number of extra dates to allow for an expected rush of audience members over the Christmas period.

Described as the 'untold story of the witches of Oz', the show arrived in London in 2006 with original Elphaba Idina Menzel leading the cast, and continues to sell out during the festive season as families flock to see the production.

According to Wicked's London website, the show will add four additional matinee performances on December 22nd and 23rd, as well as on the 29th and the 30th in order to accommodate the extra demand.

Additionally, the production confirmed that it will be running its usual matinee performances on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, but like the rest of London's theatreland, it will not have evening performances on these days.

Wicked sees an extraordinary climb in demand over Christmas, with the company annually publishing its most successful sales results in the month of December. This is helped by the show's family-friendly nature, catchy numbers and extraordinary set and costumes.

Currently starring Jennifer DiNoia and Savannah Stevenson, the show puts the misunderstood green-skinned witch Elphaba at the centre of the world of Oz, showing that a lot happened before Dorothy dropped in.

Viewers will likely be familiar with the song Defying Gravity, which has been performed and parodied by many artists and has even appeared in a number of sitcoms and cartoons.

Wicked is booking until November 2015 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre and tickets would make an ideal gift for the family at Christmas.
