Visitors Flock to Edinburgh's Galleries
Date Posted: 06/02/13
The wonderful array of art galleries on offer in the Scottish capital appears to be a major draw for those staying at hotels in Edinburgh.
According to figures from the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS), there was a surge of some 25 per cent in visitor numbers across its three sites in Edinburgh - the Scottish National Gallery, National Gallery of Modern Art and National Portrait Gallery.
A total of 1.6 million people visited the three galleries last year, a record high, with the refurbishment of the National Portrait Gallery thought to be a major driving force behind the figures.
Highlights of the NGS's 2012 programme included the Van Gogh to Kandinsky exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery and the Picasso & Modern Britain show at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
John Leighton, director-general of NGS, said: "Art and culture are becoming increasingly important for attracting visitors to Scotland and we are working with colleagues and partners around the country to make a significant contribution to the tourist economy as well as to enhance the cultural life of the public."
