Twelfth Night given four-star rating
Date Posted: 19/01/11
Twelfth Night could be the ideal production to see when taking London theatre breaks, according to a review of Sir Peter Hall's fourth production of the play.
Michael Billington, writing for the Guardian, said that in classic, late-Hall style, there is a rapt attention to detail, which is highlighted in an "extraordinary second scene" which reveals the shipwrecked Viola and a sea captain.
"Charles Edwards's Aguecheek, arguably the best performance of the evening, is no mere ninny but an aristocratic manic depressive who lends a rueful sadness to the haunting line, 'I was adored once too'," he added.
Mr Billington went on to say that there is a lot to enjoy in the production, with 80-year-old Hall offering a "resonant chamber-version which highlights the play's verbal splendour".
Twelfth Night is currently running at London's Cottesloe Theatre until Wednesday March 2nd, with performances running throughout the week, including matinee shows on Saturdays.
