Take in the 'spirit of Rome' when visiting the Italian capital
Date Posted: 12/04/11
Visitors on Rome city breaks have been advised to visit the Altare della Patria which gives "magnificent views" of the city.
Stefania Gatta, a spokesperson for the Italian State Tourist Board, said that the large white monument has various levels which can be scaled, with a cafeteria on the second level which looks out over the Roman Fort and Colosseum.
Ms Gatta recommended taking a stroll through Campo Macchio as this is an area of "old Rome" which is full of history.
"Just try and take in the spirit of the city. Because if you walk these parts of Rome, you see a little pub that has been there for maybe 50 years and the little artisan shops, and there you see the true Roman life, not just the one for the tourists. It still retains a lot of charm," she added.
On Sunday May 1st, the beatification of Pope John Paul II takes place, with Trivago.co.uk claiming that it will attract more visitors than the royal wedding.
