Summer Festivals Bring Barcelona’s Districts to Life

Barcelona is well known for being one of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting cities, with a host of people jetting off here for weekend breaks throughout the year. We all know, too, that no one throws a party quite like the Spanish, so timing your trip to coincide with one of Barcelona’s festivals is bound to make for a memorable getaway.

The various districts of the city all host their own festivals and there are a few coming up over the next couple of weeks.

Later this week, on Friday August 15th, Festa Major de Gracia will kick off, with the streets  of the city’s Gracia district really coming alive at this time of year. During the event, locals decorate their streets in all kinds of weird and wacky designs, from pirate ships to dinosaur-filled jungles.

There are parades, street performances, food stalls, bouncy castles, fireworks displays and plenty more to keep you occupied. In fact, food has become a particularly important part of this event, with a gastronomic fair held at Placa de Manuel Torrente from Monday August 18th until Thursday August 21st.

Festa Major de Gracia also closes on Thursday August 21st, but this isn’t the only fiesta you can look forward to in Barcelona this month.

From Saturday August 23rd until Sunday August 31st, Festa Major de Sants will take place in the Sants-Montjuic district. Like Festa Major de Gracia, these celebrations spill out onto the streets, with parties, firework displays, musical performances and much more all taking place in this vibrant part of the city.

There’s a traditional side to this event too, with churches decked out in colourful floral tributes to St Bartholomew. One of the highlights is what’s known as correfoc, which takes place on the final evening of the festival and sees dozens of fireworks shoot up into the night sky in a dazzling display.
