Date Posted: 24/04/14
Fans of the 1998 Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love are in for a treat as the play is set to come to London’s West End.
The production is to open at the Noel Coward Theatre on July 23rd and will star Tom Bateman and Lucy Briggs-Owen in the lead roles of William Shakespeare and Viola De Lessps.
It is being directed by Declan Donnellan and has been adapted by Lee Hall from the Academy Award-winning screenplay by Marc Nolan and Tom Stoppard.
Shakespeare in Love is a story based loosely on the life of William Shakespeare and his inspiration for one of the greatest love stories of all time - Romeo and Juliet. It tells the story of a noble woman - Viola De Lessps whom Shakespeare is in love with, but is forbidden to be with as she has been promised to someone else.
Producer Friedman said of the production: “Every now and then a story comes along that cries out to be staged. This is one such story. Shakespeare in Love bursts with life and is a moving and hilarious celebration of everything that we love about the inspirational and transformative power of theatre.”
