Schedule of events for London 2012 Olympics released
Date Posted: 16/02/11
The London 2012 Olympic Games will get underway with women's football on Monday July 25th, two days before the opening ceremony.
Those booking London hotels will be able to see the likes of Jessica Ennis and Paula Radcliffe in action over the middle weekend, with Usain Bolt a likely star of the 100m final on Sunday August 5th.
Swimming fans could see Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe square up against each other on Monday July 30th at the men's 200m freestyle event, with Tom Daley also hoping to be going for gold on the same day.
Passes for the Olympics go on sale on Tuesday March 15th, with 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe describing them as the "greatest tickets on earth for the greatest show on earth".
"We are now getting to the business end of the project and we know from the number of people who have signed up for ticket information that there is a real hunger from all parts of the country to be there," he added.
Women's footballer Casey Stoney, speaking to the BBC, said that the fact the sport is the opening event of the Games could raise its profile in the UK.
