Relax on the Beach in Paris

Relax on the Beach in Paris

Paris probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you think of beaches, but in August the French capital adds a few stretches of golden sand to its repertoire of attractions.

Back in 2002, the first beach on the Seine was set up in August and since then, the number has increased to three.

The original beach was on the Right Bank, stretching from the Louvre to the Pont de Sully. The second was added on the Left Bank, within easy reach of the Port de la Gare metro station, and the most recent sandy strip is close to the Bassin de la Villette canal.

These little beaches, complete with parasols, deck chairs and palm trees, provide a little bit of respite from the heat that Paris experiences at this time of the year. In fact, August is not usually a popular time for travellers to visit the French capital, with many locals also leaving to enjoy the coast, rather than weathering the heat in the city.

But that means there will be far fewer crowds at many of Paris’s top attractions, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral.

And once you’ve finished sightseeing, you can hit the beach. There are ice cream vendors by all the stretches of sand that have been created along the Seine, so you can relax and enjoy a refreshing snack while watching the world go by.

That’s not all you’ve got to look forward to - head to the beach close to Bassin de la Villette, meanwhile, and you’ll find pools and fountains along with the sand. It’s the perfect place to cool off.

If you’d like to see Paris from a slightly different perspective you can hop in a kayak and paddle your way along the Seine - these are also on offer at the city’s urban beaches.

So, a weekend break in Paris this month could offer a little more than you expected - not only amazing culture, stunning heritage sites and delicious cuisine, but a day at the beach too!
