Phill Jupitus to join Urinetown

Phill Jupitus will take to the stage in a very different production to his usual stand-up comedy routine this Christmas, as the veteran comedian prepares to take on the role of Caldwell B Cladwell in the popular West End show.

Best known for his quick wit and the razor-sharp observations shown in his role as team captain in the long-running television panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Jupitus will join the cast of Urinetown from December 1st.

But while comedy is undoubtedly his bread and butter, the world of musical theatre isn't entirely alien to him, with Jupitus previously participating in Spamalot: The Monty Python Musical and Hairspray to great acclaim.

"I've always quite liked musicals as a punter but I don't think I even thought about being one until David Grindrod got me in to read a part for The Woman in White," he told What's On Stage.

"I said to him 'why did you call me in?' and he said 'you can hold a tune'. I said 'how do you know?' and he said 'I watch Buzzcocks.'"

Urinetown, a Broadway import, is currently playing at the Apollo Theatre. Written by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, it is set in a dystopian future in which an unlikely hero leads the people in an uprising against private toilets. Everything from the legal system to capitalism is satirised and parodied.

The West End production started at the St James before moving to its current home and the direction is by Jamie Lloyd.

From December 1st, Matthew Seadon-Young will continue to star as Bobby Strong, while Jonathan Slinger continues his run as Officer Lockstock. Nathan Amzi and Rosanna Hyland will stay on as Officer Barrel and Hope Cladwell respectively.
