New Elphaba for West End Wicked

New Elphaba for West End Wicked

Following two weeks of uncertainty on the West End theatre scene, it has been announced that Jennifer DiNoia will take over the highly coveted role of Elphaba in Wicked for a limited engagement at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.

The news comes hot on the heels of a turbulent time for the musical, which saw Willemijn Verkaik pull out of her contract early in order to undergo back surgery, and then Nikki Davis-Jones withdraw before she had even started for undisclosed reasons.

DiNoia, who has had plenty of time to perfect the role following engagements on Broadway, the US National Tour, in Chicago and in Sydney, will replace current Elphaba Kerry Ellis when she completes her limited engagement on October 25th.

She commented: "I am so honoured and excited to be making my West End and UK debut in this incredible role that has been part of my life and career for eight extraordinary years. I look forward to working with Savannah Stevenson and the amazing London company."

Wicked has long had a reputation for bringing in talent from other productions, with many of the actresses playing Elphaba developing large fan bases during their time in the musical.

The story features a unique take on the world of Oz in which the Wicked Witch was not evil but merely misunderstood, while the Wizard is a benevolent dictator who victimises large groups of society in order to remain in power.

Kids will adore the ballad-like tunes such as I'm Not That Girl, Defying Gravity and No Good Deed, while adults will appreciate the interesting spin on the tale, which even shows the real origins of the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion.

Wicked is playing at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, just opposite Victoria train station, and tickets can be booked up until November 7th 2015.
