Nelson's Trafalgar Uniform Heading to France for Paris Napoleon Exhibition
Date Posted: 08/02/13
Anyone with an interest in military history staying in Paris hotels should head to the city's Musee de l'Armee, which this year will be hosting a special exhibition on a man who had a significant hand in shaping modern Europe - Napoleon.
The Napoleon and Europe exhibition runs at the museum from March 27th until July 14th and will examine the French military leader's exploits across the continent.
One of the most interesting items on display will be the bloodstained and bullet-torn shirt worn by Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, where he defeated Napoleon's naval forces but at the cost of his life.
It is the first time the shirt has left British soil in almost 208 years.
Speaking to the Guardian, Quintin Colville, curator of naval history at the National Maritime Museum (NMM), which is lending the uniform to the Musee de l'Armee, explained the item's significance.
"It is absolutely an icon of British history and I don't think it has a competitor," he said. "It's never been loaned by the NMM before and hasn't left these shores since it returned from Trafalgar with Nelson's body, so, as you can imagine, every possible precaution has been taken."
