National Tulip Day in Amsterdam

Date Posted: 31/12/14

National Tulip Day in Amsterdam

If there's anything the Dutch are particularly known for in the garden, it is their mastery of the tulip. The season for this beautiful and colourful flower begins early in the year on National Tulip Day, which sees thousands of people flocking to Amsterdam to get in on the fun.

Commencing on January 17th this year, the nationwide celebration is perhaps most vigorously enjoyed in the Dutch capital, with plenty of opportunities to find out exactly why the people of the Netherlands hold this flower so close to their hearts.

The city's main attraction during this special time is undoubtedly Dam Square. Though it is picturesque all year round, it is certainly at its best in January, when tulip growers from across the country gather to construct a special garden using the flowers.

This consists of tens of thousands of tulips, which transform the square into a sea of colour, peppered with exciting surprises and flower-related promotions.

Visitors are invited to pluck a single free tulip from the garden to take home with them, in recognition of the fact that across the globe, some 1.7 billion Dutch tulips will bring spring into homes and businesses.

More than 10,000 people will flock to Dam Square on National Tulip Day to pick their own tulip, making this one of the most anticipated events in the whole of the Netherlands. But it's not just about the floral extravaganza and, all across the capital, bars and restaurants will be holding special deals for those who wish to celebrate the floral bonanza.

If you're thinking of visiting Amsterdam during this incredibly special period, be advised that it is best to book your accommodation as early as possible for your weekend break, as thousands flock to the city for this exciting event.
