Mirrorcity explores city living
Date Posted: 05/12/14
Living in our fantastic and beautiful capital city can be an interesting and contradictory experience, at least according to a new exhibition taking place in London's own Hayward Gallery.
The prestigious institution plays host to Mirrorcity, an interactive and extraordinary piece of work devised by 23 artists who all share a love of the city and want to portray their favourite elements.
From the traditional and the amplified to the high-tech and the illusionistic, what we see here is a fascinating view of a metropolis that loves to contradict itself almost as much as it loves to wow visitors both international and domestic.
The creatives involved aimed to blur the lines between reality and fantasy, developing a space in which you're never sure what's going to happen.
Dramatic differences in the types of art on offer help this impression. One moment, you're experiencing a psychedelic environment of wondrous colours and projections. The next, you're climbing into one of London's infamous black cabs.
Impromptu and seemingly random performances from live artists also help to create a truly magnificent atmosphere, with the creatives doing their best to conjure up an environment in which anything could happen - a reflection of our true London.
Among the highlights, viewers will want to look out for Lindsay Seers’s ‘Nowhere Less Now’ is a video that blends her seafaring heritage with the narrative of a fictional seaman, situated in the upturned hull of a gigantic replica ship.
Last year's Turner Prize winner Laure Prouvost exhibits her acclaimed 'The Artist' piece, which resembles a cluttered studio space. Signs that inform the viewers not to look up or to keep left add to the prevalent sense of discombobulation.
Mirrorcity is on until January 4th and tickets are priced at £10.90, making it the perfect Christmas present for an art-loving friend or relative.
