Made in Dagenham posts closing notice

New British musical Made in Dagenham is set to close on the West End after just five months, despite the show opening just last November to mostly warm reviews from the critics.

Starring Bond girl and theatre veteran Gemma Arterton, the production tells the story of a fight for equal pay between men and women during the late 1960s, from the factory floor of a Ford production plant in Dagenham.

The musical is based on the 2010 film starring Bob Hoskins, Rosamund Pike, Sally Hawkins, Geraldine James and Miranda Richardson, which was in turn based on an actual strike in 1968 that lead to the equal pay act of 1970.

It tells how Rita O'Grady, a fictional character played by Gemma Arterton in the musical production, inspires the sewing machinists to walk out of the factory in a defiant gesture for equal pay.

While fans of the show will undoubtedly be disappointed by the closing notice, producer Stage Entertainment is reportedly considering UK tour options that will allow more of the country to see this fantastic musical.

"Brand new, British musicals are few and far between, particularly those that can make you laugh and move you in equal measure," commented Rebecca Quigley of the firm.

"Our writers, creative team and company have been particularly passionate about telling this true story of a remarkable event in our history with the wit, heart and creativity it deserves. They’ve achieved that and so much more."

The show's planned closure has sparked a debate among British theatre commentators, many of which are lamenting the fact that new musicals are not attracting the audiences they once used to.

Made in Dagenham will finish its West End run on April 11th, to coincide with the end of Arterton's contract.
