London's streets light up for Christmas

London's streets light up for Christmas

The festive period is well underway in London, and the capital's extraordinary array of streets is currently illuminated in a typically spectacular fashion by a mind blowing selection of Christmas lights. Nothing is likely to get you in the Christmas spirit better than a trip to some of our favourite locations below, where you can admire some of the most incredible displays in Europe and perhaps even take a selfie or two.

Regent Street

The crowned antler design of electric blue and warm gold makes its much-anticipated return. Stretched over the prestigious shopping street - where you can get started on the gift-buying, incidentally - each design is subtly different, which makes it even more fun to wander along getting as many photos as you can.

Oxford Street

For its 55th year of being illuminated for the festive period, Oxford Street welcomes the return of the 1778 glowing white orbs, which debuted last year to great effect. In the evening, they seem to float completely unaided above the heads of shoppers, with the dark sky effectively hiding the cables from which they are suspended. It really is a magical sight.

Covent Garden

Always one of the hottest places for Christmas lights, Covent Garden's stunning piazza is iridescent throughout December - the glowing heart of London. In one corner, an enormous Christmas tree decorated with red and white bulbs provides some festive cheer, while a giant silver reindeer stands majestically atop a pile of gifts on the east side. Furthermore, the entirety of the cobbled and charismatic piazza is decorated with fairylights and giant baubles, turning the traditional shopping arcades into a veritable winter wonderland that is sure to delight adults and children alike.

Bond Street

Bond Street has a bit of a reputation for being more than a little glamorous anyway, but the glittering makeover afforded the stretch of road has only made it look even more spectacular than usual. Sprays of peacock-inspired decorations arc delicately from building to building, with each junction crowned with a cylindrical spray of bulbs. Giant features adorn every festive display window. Spectacular stuff - you'll want to bring a camera.

Natural History Museum

As always, the Natural History Museum will be joining in with the celebrations with a splendid light show involving its gorgeous old buildings. The surrounding trees are also intricately decorated with lines of golden fairylights, leading all the way up to the extravagant Christmas tree which overlooks a fantastic ice rink. Warm yourself up with a seasonal treat from one of the surrounding food and drink stalls.

Carnaby Street

Synonymous with the swinging 60s, this classic Soho street contains dozens of boutiques and arcades that are perfect for finding those unique Christmas presents. And the extravagant decorations only help to get you in the spirit of things - fantastically creative displays stretched between buildings provide much of the atmosphere here. Our favourites are the headphone-wearing Santa Claus constructs.
