London welcomes Coral Reefs: Secret Cities of the Sea

It's often said that we know more about the surface of the moon than our own oceans, but the Natural History Museum in London is attempting to change this fact by offering a glimpse into life below the waves in its new exhibition.

Coral Reefs: Secret Cities of the Sea will allow visitors to the prestigious venue to able to find out if life really is better under the sea, venturing into the incredible world of coral reefs and the lifeforms that they support.

In total, more than 200 fascinating exhibits will be on display, demonstrating the vital part that these incredible natural structures play in our underwater ecosystem. Among the most interesting offerings is the specimen taken by Darwin himself on the bridge of the HMS Beagle.

All guests - and young ones in particular - will relish the chance to dive beneath the waves on a virtual exploration that will see you exploring how each and every living creature in the reef works together to ensure survival.

The exhibition has been arranged by Dr Ken Johnson, Museum coral reefs expert, who said that it will help to raise recognition about the international importance of these awe-inspiring natural structures.

"Coral reefs are not simply beautiful environments," he explained. "They provide food, income and storm protection for many millions of people around the world."

The exhibition promises to be one of the most ambitious at the Natural History Museum, combining a virtual reef experience with hundreds of specimens and an actual living reef in a tank.

Photography enthusiasts will also be pleasantly stunned by the exhibits on display - some of the best underwater shots in the world will be available for viewing.

Coral Reefs: Secret Cities of the Sea will run from March 27th until September 13th at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington.
