London to acknowledge Jewish musical theatre artists
Date Posted: 23/01/15
The contribution made by Jews to musical theatre is set to be acknowledged by the Garrick Theatre when the central London venue will host a celebration entitled: You Won’t Succeed On Broadway If You Don't Have Any Jews.
Starring a number of highly talented West End and Broadway performers, the programme will feature plenty of old favourites from highly admired musical theatre stars, in recognition of the unique way that the Jewish faith has shaped the art form over the years.
Among the incredible voices that will be heard when the concert goes ahead in February is Shimi Goodman, whose previous theatrical work includes professional productions of From Here to Eternity, Paper Dolls, Midsummer Night's Dream and Ragtime.
Also headlining are Alex Marshall (Aladdin), Jodie Beth Meyer (High School Musical UK Tour) and Rebecca Wicking (Into the Woods, Beauty and the Beast). They will be joined by Sasha Herst , Freya Tilly, Tanya Truman, Daniel Donskoy, Rosanna Harris, Simone Douani, Natasha Karp, Georgie Freeman, Francesca Berlin and Jackie Marks.
Songs from theatrical stalwarts including Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber and many more famous names that have long delighted on both the West End and Broadway theatre scenes.
The concert will take place as a one-night-only basis on February 8th and is certain to prove popular with lovers of performance. It starts at 7pm and is expected to last two hours and 20 minutes.
It's not the first time that the Jewish contribution to theatre has been acknowledged onstage.
Indeed, the name of the concert "You Won’t Succeed On Broadway If You Don't Have Any Jews" was inspired by the long-running and successful musical Spamalot, which had a song with a similar title that similarly paid homage to the contribution.
