London set to host inaugural free film festival

When taking a city break, there are always plenty of things to see and do no matter where you head, but rarely do these feel more satisfying than when you can partake without having to pay - a benefit those headed to London's newest celebration of cinema will be able to enjoy later this month.

London Fields Free Film Festival is coming to the city for the first time from next Friday (October 17th) and will be resident in the capital until October 26th. It is an event entirely run by volunteers designed to open people up to a wider world of cinema, with every showing having free entry for visitors.

The ten-day celebration of cinema will have something for everyone, with the range of film types likely to bring people from all walks of life with a wide taste in movies. The main focus will be on themes based around the Hackney area, as well as films with actors, directors and writers who hail from the region.

While this might sound like a restrictive rule, organisers promise that the wide choice in film type will mean this is not the case. Features, documentaries, shorts, animation and experimental films will all be on the card throughout the ten days of the festival.

Venues for the event will include, among others, The Laundry Canteen and Bar, St Joseph's Hospice, Hackney City Farm and the London College of Fashion.

Fans of Ryan Gosling will also be able to enjoy an entire day dedicated to the Canadian actor at Hackney Attic @ The Picture House on Sunday October 19th. At this special event, viewers will not only be able to enjoy his hit film Drive, but will also be able to take part in an interactive vote to decide what other Gosling flicks will be shown throughout the day.

Other films that will be shown throughout the festival will include Dazed and Confused, Grey Gardens, Under the Cranes and Frances Ha.
