Legally Blonde sees success at Olivier Awards
Date Posted: 14/03/11
Legally Blonde: The Musical managed an impressive showing at the Olivier Awards last night (March 13th), picking up three gongs.
The show was named as the Best New Musical, beating off competition from Andrew Lloyd Weber's Phantom of the Opera sequel Love Never Dies and a musical adaptation of the classic 1970 film Love Story.
Sheridan Smith picked up the gong for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Elle Woods, while Jill Halfpenny won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical.
Speaking to the BBC, Smith said: "I was so gobsmacked and overwhelmed. This is beyond my wildest dreams. I'm baffled, but so honoured."
Legally Blonde's success at the Olivier Awards builds on that seen at the Whatsonstage.com Awards, where it once again was named as the Best New Musical.
Some 180,000 tickets for the show at the Savoy Theatre have now been put on sale for those heading on London theatre breaks until March 31st 2012.
Other winners at the Olivier Awards include We Will Rock You, which received the BBC Radio 2 Olivier Audience Award, while Clybourne Park won the MasterCard Best New Play Award.
