Kristin Scott Thomas gets royal role

Kristin Scott Thomas is set to take on the role of the Queen in the new West End run of Peter Morgan's award-winning play The Audience next year, it has been announced, with the actress set to follow in the footsteps of Helen Mirren.

The production in London will run in tandem with the Broadway premiere, in which Mirren will reprise the role she originated when The Audience first opened on the West End last year.

Focusing on the Queen's weekly meetings with each of the British prime ministers, the play was praised for its excellent script and extraordinary performances from Mirren and a cast of superb actors portraying each PM, including Richard McCabe as Harold Wilson, Haydn Gwynne as Margaret Thatcher and Nathaniel Parker as Gordon Brown.

"From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister uses these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive," the official synopsis states.

It is during these intimate sessions that the Queen discusses and debates with those leading her country, and she not only forces them to reveal a little of themselves, but also shows a little of her own character behind closed doors.

Writer Peter Morgan has confirmed that the play will be slightly re-written in time for the new Broadway and West End runs to include a scene with Tony Blair, who was omitted from the original production.

Kristin Scott Thomas will take on the royal role when the show re-opens at the Apollo Theatre in the heart of London's West End. Tickets are now on sale for the run starting from April 21st - just two nights before the UK's general election.

Morgan added that he would be more than happy to write a scene to include Ed Miliband should there be a dramatic change in government in 2015.
