Jim Dale to bring show to West End

Carry On star Jim Dale is bringing his acclaimed autobiographical one-man performance Just Jim Dale to the Vaudeville Theatre, following huge success in the form of sell-out shows and praise from the critics for the Broadway venture.

Speaking to London's Evening Standard, the 79-year-old actor, singer and entertainer said of his excitement to be returning to the capital's theatre scene - a place he hasn't been since 1996 when he performed as Fagin in the cast of Oliver!.

"It’s been quite a long time since I was in London," he said to the publication. "As Fagin, you’re wearing whiskers and a hairy wig so it will be nice to go back as myself."

Despite the fact he has spent decades living in New York with his wife June, he added that he misses London and relies on his English accent to find work.

His one-man show promises to explore the exhilarating highlights and dizzying lows of an extraordinary career that has included joining the National Theatre after an invitation from Sir Laurence Olivier and starring in 11 Carry On films.

It's fitting that Just Jim Dale will make its London debut at the Vaudeville Theatre as it is where the man himself made his West End start in 1965 in The Wayward Way - 50 years ago.

"Stepping onto that stage again will be as comfortable to me as slipping into an old pair of jeans," Dale told the press.

The one-man show consists of anecdotes and song, and is directed by Richard Maltby Jr, with accompaniment provided by pianist Mark York. It will open in the West End on May 28th following previews from May 26th and two shows in Northamptonshire at the Corby Cube in April, near Dale's birthplace of Rothwell, Northamptonshire.
