Japan comes to Trafalgar Square

If you're into Japanese culture, don't miss out on the Japan Matsuri event, which is due to take over Trafalgar Square in central London for a special Saturday event that will celebrate everything from geisha to green tea.

The annual extravaganza, which is a joint effort organised by the Japan Society, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry in the UK, the Nippon Club and The Japan Association, attracts more than 70,000 attendees a year, meaning there's sure to be something special in the atmosphere.

Ambassador of Japan Mr Keiichi Hayashi gets things off to a start by opening the festival at 11am this coming Saturday (September 27th), which will consist of the ceremonial cracking of a sake barrel as per Japanese tradition.

The opening signifies the start of a plethora of performances on the main stage and various opportunities to experience Japanese culture in the surrounding stalls.

Foodie fanatics will want to circulate the square, trying all manner of delicious foodstuffs that invariably include okonomiyaki (savoury pancake), takoyaki (octopus balls), sushi and other tasty morsels.

Cartoon enthusiasts will have the chance to scribe their own designs on the much-loved Manga Wall in front of the National Gallery, while karaoke lovers have the chance to put their name forwards for the International Karaoke Competition.

If you're keen to find something Japanese that you can take home to remember this special day, worry not as there will be plenty of arts, crafts and artisan stalls selling everything from sake cups to soy sauce bowls.

Families will find that the kids are well catered-for, with a programme of activities especially designed to get the young ones interested in this unique culture.

Quite frankly, it's a day of Japanese-related fun that you won't want to miss out on.
