Head to Prague for Witches' Night
Date Posted: 18/03/14
To celebrate the end of winter, this festival on April 30th is Prague’s version of our Bonfire Night and Halloween rolled into one.
Taking place in the rather warmer days at the end of April, this Pagan festival aims to thwart the presence of evil by the burning of witches. The celebrations begin with a procession of mythical creatures and an effigy of a witch.
There’s also a Satan character who pushes a cart with a real-life woman dressed as a witch, who proclaims her innocence in fits of hysteria. At the end of the procession, the executioner asks the mainly intoxicated crowd whether to pardon her or execute her. Inevitably, the effigy is set alight whatever the result and the odd spectator will attempt to jump over the fire.
One of the many places to see this is Petrín Hill in Malá Strana. Make sure that you book yourself into a Prague hotel well in advance, as this time of year is very popular.
