Harvey for limited West End run

A new production of Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy Harvey is all set for a limited run at London's Theatre Royal Haymarket, with star of stage and screen Maureen Lipman and Olivier-winning James Dreyfus in the lead roles of Veta Louise Simmons and Elwood P Dowd respectively.

The play, written by Mary Chase, is set to debut in Birmingham before embarking on a short tour, eventually making it to the West End for a March 17th debut.

Renowned performer Lipman has made her name as an actress throughout a long career that has included appearances in best-loved television series' such as Doctor Who, as well as much-adored musicals and plays including Sondheim's A Little Night Music.

Wicked alumnus Desmond Barrit will also star in the role of Judge Omar Gaffney, as well as Theatreland stalwart David Bamber as William R. Chumley.

Other cast members include Felicity Dean as Betty Chumley, Ingrid Oliver as Myrtle Mae Simmons, Amanda Boxer as Miss Ethel Chauvenet, Sally Scott as Nurse Ruth Kelly, Youssef Kerkour as Duane Wilson, Jack Hawkins as Lyman Sanderson and Linal Haft as E J Lofgren.

Harvey won writer Chase a Pulitzer prize and tells the story of a gentleman called Elwood P. Dowd, whose sole flaw is his unwavering friendship with a six-foot-tall imaginary rabbit called Harvey.

When well-meaning Veta tries to take him along to a psychiatrist with the hope of sparing their family the shame, it is she who is accidentally committed for anxiety, sparking a whirlwind chain of events that results in everyone looking for a man and his invisible rabbit.

Harvey will have a gala night in the West End on March 23rd, and features design by Peter McKintosh, with lighting by Howard Harrison and sound by Paul Groothuis.
