Gypsy confirmed for West End run

The Chichester Festival Theatre's much-anticipated revival of the 50s musical Gypsy has been confirmed for a West End transfer, with plans for a 30-week stint at the Savoy Theatre unveiled last week by the producers.

According to the Daily Mail, the production will run from March 30th until November 28th 2015, marking the first time that Gypsy has been seen on London's theatre scene since the 1973 incarnation in which Angela Lansbury took on the lead role of Mama Rose.

The show, with music and lyrics by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents, has been away from the West End for more than 40 years, but a well-received revival at the Chichester Festival Theatre earlier this year proved far too good for ATG - which runs the Savoy Theatre - to resist.

Critics particularly praised the talents of theatrical stalwart Imelda Staunton, who has long been a fixture of London's diverse and exciting theatre scene and has also appeared in a number of blockbuster Hollywood films including the Harry Potter series.

She last appeared in a production of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd alongside Michael Ball, a turn that similarly started at the Chichester Festival Theatre before transferring to the West End. Her performance earned her the 2013 Olivier Award for Best Actress.

It has still not been confirmed whether Staunton's Gypsy co-stars Lara Pulver and Kevin Whately will also return for the West End run, but reports indicate both are keen to provided their schedules align.

Based on the memoirs of American performer Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy is considered one of the most popular Broadway musicals. Featuring songs such as  "Let Me Entertain You," "Rose's Turn" and "Everything's Coming Up Roses,", its story is both spectacularly entertaining and very moving.
