Gypsy adds Pulver, Davison to cast

Sherlock star Lara Pulver and former Doctor Who Peter Davison will join Imelda Staunton when the production opens at the Savoy Theatre in the West End this spring.

Following an acclaimed turn on the stage at the Chichester Festival Theatre, the true story of US-born entertainment legend Momma Rose will be retold on London's extraordinary theatre scene for the first time in 40 years.

Pulver, who has received nominations for Olivier Awards and the Whatsonstage Theatregoers' Choice Award, will reprise the role of Louise - a part she played when the production initially set up at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Davison, meanwhile, joins the cast for the first time to play Herbie. Famous for his portrayal of the Fifth Doctor, his more recent work has included the portrayal of Henry Sharpe in Law & Order: UK.

With choreography by Stephen Mear, the West End production will run for a limited stint only and will feature designs by Anthony Ward, musical direction and orchestration by Nicholas Skilbeck, lighting by Mark Henderson, and sound by Paul Groothuis.

Previews commence from March 28th with the production schedule set to commence properly from April 15th.

Gypsy tells the true story of American entertainment icon Momma Rose, who travels across the country with daughters Baby June and Louise in search of vaudeville success in the face of the ever-changing trends of entertainment.

With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, it has become a classic of the musical theatre genre, although high production costs have kept it away from the West End for 40 years, until now.

Theatre fans are advised to stay tuned for more casting news as the preview date moves closer.
