Golf tourism scores a birdie for its 2011 round
Date Posted: 19/12/11
Golf tourism has enjoyed an encouraging round this year and is currently above par, according to a new survey.
Figures from Golf Tourism Scotland (GTS) showed that 76 per cent of professionals from the travel, hospitality and industry sector said that progress had been made in 2011.
Lee Derrick, chairman of GTS, said that confidence is returning to the sector thanks to more people booking weekend breaks and taking to their favourite courses.
"Golf in Scotland has been so ingrained in the culture that the economic contribution it makes is often overlooked. This is changing, and with a run of high-profile tournaments taking place in Scotland over the next few years, not least of which is the Ryder Cup, I believe the industry's significance is set to soar," he added.
While the 2012 Ryder Cup will take place in the US, Perthshire's Gleneagles is due to host the tournament in 2014, with players and spectators gathering at the end of September to see their team lift the famous trophy.
