Faith Healer gets good reviews at Edinburgh

Storyteller supreme Faith Healer is getting excellent reviews on its current engagement at Edinburgh's Lyceum Theatre, where its dark and tragic tale is intriguing theatregoers.

Considered a classic of modern theatre thanks to its fascinating structure - which sees three characters engage in intertwining monologues to form a rich and gripping storyline - the tale centres around a faith healer and his travelling companions as they go from one British village to the next, seeking out their fortunes.

Lead character Frank, superbly played here by a shabby and charismatic Sean O’Callaghan, comes across as a shameless re-inventor with little respect for the people who make his life bearable every day.

Critics commented that Patrick Driver’s dapper, beautifully-pitched Teddy is also worth witnessing, with his unrequited love for Frank's wife Grace proving an absolute highlight of the show.

However, it is the character of Grace herself that gets much of the emotional weighting in this epic poem of monologues, and Niamh McCann in the role reportedly does not disappoint. Critics have called her "beautiful" and "touching", particularly in the final sequence of the monologue when she exposes her empty heart without Frank.

Faith Healer is playing at the Edinburgh's Lyceum Theatre, the intimacy of which is said to have helped director John Dove to attain a much greater level of impact for this hard-hitting piece of theatre.

The show will remain in the Scottish capital until February 7th, with evening performances taking place from Tuesday to Saturday and matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Faith Healer runs for approximately two hours and ten minutes including a 20 minute interval.
