Exhibition of London photos takes visitors back in time
Date Posted: 04/03/14
A collection of photographs taken by little-known photographer C A Mathew is to go on show for the first time this month.
Those set to visit London between March 7th and April 25th should make their way to the Eleven Spitalfields Gallery, where the stunning images will be on display.
All of the pictures were taken on April 20th 1912 in the Spitalfields area of the city and show the everyday lives of the people who lived there.
Just 21 of Mathew's photos were kept in the archives of the Bishopsgate Institute and their rediscovery offers visitors to step back in time.
Jeremy Freedman, curator of the exhibition, told the Metro: "These pictures show Spitalfields and the City a century ago in incredible detail. They are the most vivid visual record of life from this era – it is like looking into a time machine."
Anyone particularly impressed with the images can purchase a print of the carefully restored photographs at the gallery.
