Emma Hatton to take on Wicked lead role

Emma Hatton is set to take on the role of Elphaba at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in the West End from the start of February 2015, in the latest of a string of casting announcements made by the production.

The actress, who currently plays the misunderstood green girl occasionally in her role as London stand-by, will step into the role after Jennifer DiNoia ends her 14-week engagement on January 31st 2015.

Her previous stage credits include We Will Rock You, Dreamboats and Petticoats, When Midnight Strikes, Cinderella and Christmas in New York, and initially joined the Wicked cast in December 2013.

Rest assured the show is in safe hands as Hatton has more than 100 shows under her belt, having filled in for an extended period while former lead actress Willemijn Verkaik left the cast for emergency surgery to her back.

The West End has been alight with speculation since Nikki Davis-Jones had to pull out of taking over the role in late October for undisclosed reasons, although the rumour mill will now undoubtedly turn its attention to some of the other leading characters in the highly popular musical.

From October 27th the cast will also include Savannah Stevenson as Glinda, Jeremy Taylor as Fiyero, Martyn Ellis as The Wizard, Liza Sadovy as Madame Morrible, Philip Childs as Doctor Dillamond, Katie Rowley Jones as Nessarose and Sam Lupton as Boq.

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, which is in turn based on LF Baum's The Wizard of Oz, Wicked attempts to shed some light on what really happened in Oz before Dorothy dropped in.

The Broadway favourite found its way to London in 2006 and has seen copycat tours and sit-down productions open to great acclaim across the world.
