Eight days until the London Marathon
Date Posted: 13/04/12
While it is far too late to enter the London Marathon, there's eight days for people to plan short breaks to the capital to watch one of the world's greatest sporting events.
This year's race takes place on Sunday, April 22nd, commencing at 09:00 BST when the elite women set off from the start line. The elite men depart 45 minutes later with the rest of the crowd while wheelchair athletes leave at 09:20 BST.
The marathon, which was first established in 1981, follows a flat course around the River Thames before finishing in The Mall next to St. James's Park.
Since its inception it has raised approximately £450 million for charity and was named the largest annual fund raising event in the world after £47.2 million was generated in 2009. The official charity since last year has been Oxfam.
The London Marathon is the traditional length of 26 miles and 385 yards and is one of the five major marathons worldwide. The others are in Boston, Berlin, Chicago and New York City.
