Edinburgh Festival Fringe begins
Date Posted: 05/08/11
Performers from across the globe are today (August 5th) taking part in the first day of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world.
Between now and August 29th, those in staying in Edinburgh hotels will get to see the streets of the historic city transformed as comedians, artists, dancers and musicians practice their crafts in a series of shows which promise to suit every taste.
This year will see 2,542 shows taking place in 258 venues over three weeks, with comedy accounting for over a third of the schedule.
Andy Parsons, Ed Byrne and Sarah Millican are among the familiar faces hoping to get some laughs out of audiences, while a comedic twist will also be put on classic stories like The 39 Steps.
The Festival Fringe also coincides with the Edinburgh International Festival, which runs from August 14th to September 4th.
Performances scheduled to take place include eastern adaptations of The Tempest and King Lear, in line with this year's theme, which celebrates the cultures of Asia.
