Cats returns to the West End

Andrew Lloyd Webber's acclaimed hit musical Cats made its much-anticipated return to the West End this week, starring none other than former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger as long-forgotten glamour-puss Grizabella.

The singer made headlines earlier this year when it was announced she would take the role, which was made famous by Elaine Paige, considered by many to be the First Lady of the West End.

This newest run marks the first time the show has been seen on a London stage since 2002, when the original production closed following a record-breaking run of 21 years.

Following press night (December 11th) critics have been quick to praise the performances of Scherzinger and her cast members, who include Cameron Ball as Macavity and Admetus, Kathryn Barnes as Tantomile and Cassie Clare as Cassandra. Ross Finnie will take on Skimbleshanks while Antoine Murray-Straughan will perform as Rum Tum Tugger.

Based on TS Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the musical has been seen by 55 million people worldwide and has grossed £1.7 billion, even inspiring a 1998 film - which is all the more incredible since Webber initially had to remortgage his home to fund its first production.

Classics from the score include the much-loved show tune Memory, a tune sung by Grizabella in which she reminisces about her showbizz days, which has been covered by more than 150 artists including Barry Manilow and Barbara Streisand.

This new production will run for a strictly limited season until February 28th at the London Palladium, and with the entirety of the original creative team back on board, it is sure to recreate the magic London audiences felt when the show first burst onto the stage.
