Casting announced for Bend It Like Beckham

Confirmed casting for the West End stage premiere of Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical has been announced, with all the main roles filled for the Gurinder Chadha-directed production.

According to a press release from Sonia Friedman Productions and Deepak Nayar Productions - both of which are involved in the project - Natalie Drew will play the football crazy main character Jess, fighting against her traditional background for a chance to prove herself on the sporting field.

Lauren Samuels will perform as fellow player Jules, while Jamie Campbell Bower will appear as their coach Joe. Scottish comedienne and impressionist Ronni Ancona is also set to take to the stage as Jules's mother.

Drew's previous onstage roles have included Teh Internet is Serious Business and Rough Cut for the Royal Court, Romeo and Juliet for the National Theatre and Twelfth Night at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park.

Samuels, meanwhile, made her professional stage debut as Wendy in Peter Pan A Musical! at Leicester Curve, and has subsequently played Sandy in Grease at the Piccadilly Theatre and Scaramouche in We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre. Reality TV fans will recognise her as a finalist on the BBC's Over the Rainbow series.

Preeya Kalidas, Jamal Andréas, Tony Jayawardena and Natasha Jayetileke will also appear in the production when it hits the stage at the Phoenix Theatre in May.

As previously announced, Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical will feature original music by Howard Goodall and lyrics by Charles Hart, as well as a brand new book by Paul Mayeda Berges and Gurinder Chadha.

The story is, of course, based on the 2002 film of the same name which starred Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra in the leading roles.
