Burns Night

Burns Night

The New Year's festivities might just be coming to a head, but Scotland already has another holiday in its sights to celebrate - the famous Burns Night festivities that take place towards the end of January.

Robert 'Robbie' Burns, the beloved poet, was born on January 25, 1759, and every year on this date, the Scots remember him through the time-honoured methods of whisky, haggis, poetry, song and dance.

Authentic Burns dinners, as they are so often called, can be found all over Edinburgh for those wanting to witness this incredible holiday first-hand. These inclusive events allow the children and grandparents to get involved in the fun, with plenty of opportunity to indulge in traditional Scottish activities such as bagpiping and line-dancing.

Food generally consumed consists of the usual suspects, with haggis being served up as the main course. This is generally accompanied by neeps and tatties - or, as they are commonly known, turnips and potatoes.

You can rely on having a good atmosphere at any one of the Burns dinners taking place in Edinburgh, with many of the locals choosing to dine out for the occasion as well.

And after you've eaten your weight in neeps and haggis, and sampled some of the fine whisky available on this very special evening, you are cordially invited to go out into the streets and witness the famous Scottish party spirit in all its glory.

As well as the sit-down dinners, Edinburgh also plays host to any number of special gigs, performances and events, all celebrated in the name of Burns on January 25th. Bars are alive with special offers and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else on the planet at this time of year.

It's not too late to book hotels and transport for Burns Night in Edinburgh, but it's best to be organised and sort yourself out as soon as possible for this highly popular event.
