British Museum tops favourite visitor attractions in UK
Date Posted: 18/08/11
The British Museum was the top visitor attraction last year, according to new research.
VisitEngland reported that the facility welcomed 5.84 million people through its doors in 2010, nearly five per cent more than in 2009.
Those booking London hotels were tempted to the museum by free entry, with the Tate Modern coming in as the second biggest attraction having welcomed 5.06 million visitors.
Free-to-enter tourist spots were some of the best performing in the capital last year, with the Victoria and Albert Museum seeing an increase in visitors of nearly 16 per cent, with over 13 per cent more people going to the Natural History Museum in 2010 than in 2009.
James Beresford, chief executive of VisitEngland, said: "England has a wealth of top-class visitor attractions, many of which are free. We know Britons are even more worried about the economy and this will have an impact on their holiday choices."
The British Museum is open daily between 10am and 17.30pm, with extended hours until 20.30pm on Friday nights.
