Bend It Like Beckham musical confirmed for West End

The previously reported rumours that the 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham will be getting a musical incarnation on the West End proved to be correct today (October 31st), with confirmation that the show will take up residency at the Phoenix Theatre next May.

Film director Gurinder Chadha, who helmed the motion picture during its production period 12 years ago, told London's theatre community that a new script has been written for the production in order to adapt [it] to the theatre setting.

"Developing Bend It Like Beckham for the stage has been the most enjoyable creative process of my career so far," she said. "It was always my intention to build on the film and to present its themes and storylines to live audiences in an exciting new dynamic way."

Musical theatre stalwarts Howard Goodall and Charles Hart have been drafted in to compose the score and write the lyrics respectively. Between them, they have dozens of credits on London's theatre scene, including The Hired Man, The Kissing-Dance, The Dreaming, Two Cities and Andrew Lloyd Webber's internationally successful The Phantom of the Opera.

The original film saw the daughter of an orthodox Sikh family in London rebelling against her family to run off to Germany so that she can play football, a sport at which she is extremely talented. Starring Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra, it was well-received by the critics and audience.

Names rumoured to be attached to the project include Samantha Barks and Frances Ruffelle, with casting set to be announced shortly. The production will also feature choreography and musical staging by Aletta Collins, set design by Miriam Buether and costume design by Katrina Lindsay.

Bend It Like Beckham will open in the Phoenix Theatre after Once, which recently announced its closure and confirmed that the production will be embarking on a Europe-wide tour.
