Ai Weiwei Play to Premiere in London This Spring
Date Posted: 20/02/13
A new play looking at the arrest and detention of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei could tempt those on London theatre breaks this spring.
#aiww: The Arrest of Ai Weiwei will premiere at Hampstead Theatre on April 11th and will run until May 18th.
The hashtag at the beginning of the title is a reference to Ai's prolific use of Twitter, where he has almost 200,000 followers.
Ai has been an outspoken critic of the Chinese government and as such was detained for almost three months without charge in 2011.
Written by Howard Brenton and directed by James Macdonald, this new play is based on Barnaby Martin's recent conversations with the exiled Chinese artist about his imprisonment.
The production is "by turns surreal, hilarious, and terrifying", says Hampstead Theatre.
"A portrait of the artist in extreme conditions, it is also an affirmation of the centrality of art and of freedom of speech in civilised society," it added.
