London Bridge & Southwark Holiday Reviews

Globe Theatre, London Bridge and Southwark

Surrounded by must-see sights and impressive views, our London Bridge Hotels are an excellent and interesting choice when it comes to planning your next short stay in the capital. The south side of the river is home to a number of London's top attractions, whilst also being a quick journey away to the famous shopping of Oxford Street and the fabulous shows in the West End, both are a mere 15 minutes away on the tube.

Our hotels in Southwark are of course in the perfect spot for visiting Southwark Cathedral, or for going wine tasting at the popular Vinopolis. No trip to this area of London is complete with taking in the breath-taking View from The Shard - 800ft up, in Western Europe's tallest building - or experience a slice of quintessential London the way it used to be down at Borough Market.

  • The trendy Southbank is just a short walk away, and top, family-friendly London attractions including The London Eye, the London Dungeons and the London Aquarium can all be found there.
  • Get all cultured and catch a show at the world-famous Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, or take in the free exhibitions at the iconic Tate Modern Art Gallery.
  • Amongst the other attractions near London Bridge, the impressive and imposing HMS Belfast is a must-see and, just across the river, you can find the fascinating Tower of London and the endlessly pretty St Paul's Cathedral.

An excellent destination for your next short break in London, check out our range of hotels near London Bridge.

Very comfortable but let down by staff attitude

Stay Date: 01/01/16, a customer aged 45-64 from Burstow who stayed at 5* Hilton London Bankside in London Bridge/City wrote this review.

We initially commented on how friendly the reception and check-in was, but this was not the case when we had a problem, the staff then turned to robot mode and stony faced and started quoting See More  Read more information policies and conditions before sorting it out. No apology or soothing words. After a long day trudging around sightseeing in appalling weather at 4pm we returned and we just wanted to shower and relaxbefore going out for the evening, but the room had not been touched. The girl at reception phoned house-keeping and in a sarcastic and deprecating tone in front of me asked for our room to be done next, but this meant waiting about 40 minutes in a chair in reception. She told us we should have booked an early room service and refused to acknowledge that it was reasonable to expect your room to havebeen serviced at 4pm. Other than this totally avoidable incident we would have rated the hotel excellent in all respects. Why can't they ensure rooms are serviced for those guests who are staying morethan one night before rooms for guests who have not yet checked in. Because of this I had time to sit in reception watching their antics and was amazed to note...they were friendly and helpful in theextreme...until guests were out of sight and then they often showed disrespect and smirked comments at each other. There are so many hotels to choose from in London that I would not choose this hotelagain based on this experience which is a shame as the comfort, location and breakfast were excellent.   Collapse  Hide

'Beautiful' Trip to London

Stay Date: 26/08/16, a customer aged 65+ who stayed at 4* DoubleTree by Hilton Tower of London in Tower Hill wrote this review.

The hotel was big but didn't feel crowded, it was clean and well furnished and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The Sky Lounge is really special and the views fantastic, however on a hot See More  Read more information Bank Holiday Friday night was very busy. Everything was great, the breakfast was the only disappointment, for the first time I can remember we had to queue in a hotel for breakfast for around 15minutes to get a table. There is a sign in front of the restaurant saying the best time to turn up and it is the earlier the better but by then it is too late. It would be good to point this out atbooking/ checking in or in the room. We went at 9.30 and despite the turnover I found the cooked breakfast cold and unappetising. But there was lots of fruit, and continental style breakfast too, but I haveto say overall uninspiring compared to the rest of the stay which was excellent.   Collapse  Hide

Romantic and fun! Great day in London

Stay Date: 23/03/18, a customer aged 25-44 from Bath Road who stayed at 4* Novotel London Tower Bridge - Friday Night Out in Tower Hill wrote this review.

Me and my husband are both 28 and thought we could have a romantic/fun night stay in London so this package was great for us. We started off with a great stay at the Novotel Tower Bridge in London See More  Read more information (all the staff goes the extra mile for anything you ask or need, they’re all so smiley and genuine keen on providing good customer service). The view from our room was lovely and we received a bottleof Prosecco as soon as we arrived. The spa facilities were there for us (we chose not to use them) Everything was lovely. We had a meal at Ask Tower Bridge, we sort of knew what to expect from themenu/food however service wise there was not much there, the waitresses looked rushed off their feet even thought the place wasn’t that busy and not keen at all on checking back if we were happy with ourfood or drinks. We decided to go to Soho and check the China Town part, it was such a lovely surprise for first timers like us! Then we head to Tiger Tiger, the staff was nice, again, songs wise itwas a nice mix of the late 80’s, 90’s and popular hits from nowadays which was great for us! The only thing I would say was the price of the drinks, a little high to then have them served in plasticglasses, and the fact that their PDQ machines siding seem to work fast enough. It took us about 15 min to pay for our drinks once, forcing us to go outside across the road to withdraw money. Breakfastwas lovely the next morning at the hotel, again offering us all kind of options for drinks and food. We definitely returned home looking forward to book our next break through Super Break.   Collapse  Hide

Staying in Bermondsey

Stay Date: 23/05/09, a customer from York who stayed at 4* Bermondsey Square Hotel in London Bridge/City wrote this review.

We were visiting London in order to babysit for our grandson whilst the parents attended a private party on the Thames. Bermondsey was an ideal location for their party and the Bermondsey square See More  Read more information hotel proved to be excellent for our purposes. It is new and the staff were exceptionally helpful willing. Nothing was too much trouble and they organised connecting rooms with extra space for a cot withno hassle at all (this I believe was actually a disabled room). A late checkout at no extra cost also meant our last day could be enjoyed to the full without worrying about luggage or where tochange. The staff looked up addresses and printed out maps and were genuinely willing to please in any way they could. Whilst in London we visited the Zoo in Regent's Park which was excellent and alsoLondon Bridge, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. We had a great time - helped by wonderful weather - did a lot of walking and especially enjoyed spending early evenings by the river with manyrestaurants and a buzzing atmosphere. The final outing was to Hamleys Toy store which was busy but fun and proved to be an excellent place to have lunch with a toddler! The trains were both on time so all inall an excellent weekend.   Collapse  Hide

Great 2 Night Stay in London

Stay Date: 02/07/09, a customer who stayed at 4* Bermondsey Square Hotel in London Bridge/City wrote this review.

Stayed at the Bermondsay Square Hotel which was excellent. Rooms were a good size with large walk in shower area. The room also had an Apple iMac computer which doubled up as the TV! It was around a See More  Read more information 10 minute walk to the Tower of London tube station and around the same distance to the Thames and Tower Bridge/HMS Belfast etc. Staff were very welcoming and the breakfast was excellent. Alfiesrestaurant is very nice inside and a lot better than the usual hotel restaurant. Would also recommend an unusual place called Shunt which is accessed via a series of tunnels in the Tower Bridge Underground Station. Bermondsey Square Hotel

Stay Date: 07/09/09, a customer from Superbreak who stayed at 4* Bermondsey Square Hotel in London Bridge/City wrote this review.

When we arrived at the hotel, we found that they had given us a free upgrade on account of the fact that it was my wife's birthday. The room was lovely, and the bed was amazing! It came with an See More  Read more information iMac, which was great for watching TV and playing on the Mac itself. The hotel itself is only a stones throw from the bus stop, where it's a five minute ride to either Bermondsey or London Bridge. It'salso about a ten minute walk from Tower Bridge. My only problem was that there isn't a real choice of cooked breakfasts for people who, like me, don't like the taste of meat. The only alternativewas vegetarian sausages, which don't appeal, as they taste like...meat! Overall, I found the hotel to be wonderful, and the all of the staff were really amazing and helpful. During the trip, wedid the Duck Tours, which are definitely the envy of anyone who does the traditional red bus tours! Going down the Thames was certainly an interesting experience, and really allowed us to go placesthat an ordinary tour wouldn't! London Zoo was also a great experience, especially the BUGS exhibit, which was very hands-on. We sat in on an experience with a Mexican redknee tarantula, and, although my wife was brought to tears due to her arachnophobia, the staff were very helpful and understanding, giving us some information about hypnotherapy to try and help her.   Collapse  Hide

A Mid Winter Break In London

Stay Date: 10/02/07, a customer from Milton Keynes who stayed at 4* Mercure London Bridge in London Bridge/City wrote this review.

London has just so much to offer the visitor, so much variety. On this break we chose Southwark as our centre, staying at the Mercure and this gave us access giving us access to a range of See More  Read more information local,South Bank, attractions. Tate Modern will be on everyone's list as a place to visit and with its corkscrew human slides display it did not disappoint. But there are many lesser known places to exploresuch as Southwark Cathedral with its history stretching back over a thousand years and its historical associations. Also, the nearby Borough Market with its huge variety of foods and other goods bringscolour and huge vitality to this area. The only downside to our break was the Saturday evening show, Spamalot. Our enjoyment of this Monty Python spin off was tempered by the cramped seating layoutat the Palace Theatre and the misfortune of having a large, broad shouldered chap directly in the line of sight. Given the considerable cost of these seats (?60 each as part of the package) this madefor a slightly disappointing, poor value for money evening. In many ways, it is the free things that London has to offer that attract, the constantly changing Thames, the varied architecture ofLondon's historic quarters, the parks and the people. As to travel, we recommend that anyone staying any legth of time consider the purchase of an Oyster Card. These are convenient to use and save a lot ofmoney.   Collapse  Hide

When we complained we were given another room in which 'there had been smoking, but a while ago'. Eventually the hotel found a room that was guaranteed non-smoking - at theexpense of other guests yet to arrive! To cap it off, the parking facilities at the hotel were very poor, with me having to wedge my car in as far as it could go, but leaving a bit sticking out leading to me getting a parkingticket!!! Overnight stays

Stay Date: 21/09/07, a customer who stayed at 4* Mercure London Bridge in London Bridge/City wrote this review.

We had 2 overnight stays before & after our holiday in the South of France . We have stopped at the Mercure before & found it convenient to walk into central London. The staff are very helpful . See More  Read more information Our first night we had an early start to catch the 7 am Eurostar from Waterloo & they ordered a taxi & provided a carry out breakfast which was superb. The rooms are small for over'night stays but theyare clean & well appointed - except for room 708 - on our return we were put into this room but could not sleep because of the loud hum from the central heating plant on the roof. We complained toreception ( approx 11pm ) & within 15 mins we were given a superior double . That is what we call service . Avoid room 708 !!! We will almost certainly book this hotel again early next year when werevisit London for a show. We must point out that for longer stays the rooms are larger. If you are going to a show then we would recommend the Palm Court in King St Covent Garden. The food is good andthe staff are helpful. Weekend on the South Bank

Stay Date: 19/01/08, a customer who stayed at 4* Mercure London Bridge in London Bridge/City wrote this review.

The Mercure London City Hotel is in a great location if you want to visit sights along the river, especially the Tate Modern which is just a few minutes walk away, the Globe Theatre and the Borough See More  Read more information Market. However, transport links to the rest of London are poor and if you want to shop or visit the South Kensington museums, it is quite a difficult journey. Similarly if you want to go to thetheatre in the evening you are probably talking about a taxi back to the hotel afterwards. The hotel itself was pleasant and the staff extremely helpful and courteous. However, I was there on anexceptionally mild January weekend and my bedroom was extremely hot. When I complained that the air conditioning was not working I was told that it worked in heating mode only during the winter and I shouldopen a window. Fine, except that with the window open the noise kept me awake. As my single room only had a window up high, I had to stand on a chair to open and close it. Breakfast was only adequate, but the bar meals in the evening were excellent and good value, especially important as there were few alternatives in the immediate area at night. During the day I would recommend some of the eateriesin and around Borough Market, just along the Thames from the Tate modern and opposite London Bridge Underground station. Tip for weekenders - the big stores on Oxford Street stay open until 7.00pm or8.00pm on Saturday, so you can travel on a Saturday morning, check in at your hotel and still have time to shop until you drop!   Collapse  Hide

Weekend Break In London

Stay Date: 17/10/09, a customer from Gainsborough who stayed at 4* Mercure London Bridge in London Bridge/City wrote this review.
