From the time we checked in until we left the staff were superb. There were always lots of people on duty. Our room was large and very clean. Good hospitality tray and nice biscuits. We ate in the restaurant every night we were there. The food was excellent and there was a good choice. Staff could not do enough for you. Breakfast too was great but cold plates did not keep the food hot, shame as the selection, cooking and choice overall was superb. One criticism we had was that people were coming into the restaurant in very scruffy clothes e.g. ripped jeans (both sexes) and trainers not really suitable for the place. It might help if there was a dress code, say smart casual no jeans or trainers, for dinner. You are advertised as a 4* hotel. Saying that we were looked after very well and would recommend the hotel to all. Collapse
Disappointing for the price that we paid

This weekend stay cost us £250 including breakfast for 2 nights, we paid more than other hotels in York as we wanted leisure facilities (although the pool is so small you can’t really swim properly in it) Our room (15) was down corridors and almost in the basement of the hotel. The whole corridor smelt of sewerage, as soon as you opened the doors it hit you. The bedroom was very tired and in desperate need of decorating. It was dark, and quite depressing. The bed and pillows were also unbelievably uncomfortable, I think the premier inn and travel lodge have comfier beds , not what I would expect from a Marriot hotel. There was a very loud noise in our bedroom from the pipes, I’m not sure if when someone used water or flushed their toilet, but it was extremely loud and woke us up throughout the night and early in the morning. It sounded like a fog horn going off! The breakfast was very nice, although exceptional busy around 0900 and the juices , eggs needed replenishing. All the food was perfect temperature and lots of variety and choice. The leisure facilities were nice, especially the sauna and steam room. There is a quiet room of loungers where you can relax, however, the cushions are absolutely disgusting and dirty. There is no way you could relax lying on them. The wrong hotel for a romantic weekend with a partner, although the location (which is about a 30 minute walk into York) and overlooking the race course was nice. Collapse

Mostly clean, except where it counts. Found remnants of a previous guest's shaving activity in plain view, both in the bath and sink. Pretty gross. No fridge in our room (so no mini bar etc). Which was missed. Rooms could do with modernizing. Most of the deco and furniture is four or five decades out of date. Housekeeping are slack when making the bed. Ours was thrown back together leaving the duvet very lumpy. Very good breakfast. Plenty of choice, and even when coming down towards the end of the service, it still all tasted fresh and hot. Beautiful views at breakfast. Collapse

Lovely two-night stay. Warmly welcomed at check-in and found a nice big room with two comfortable double beds. The kids (7&11yo) didn't mind sharing the bed (too much!). Pool is nice - a little tired - but is open early to late and they don't impose any restricted hours for children. The racecourse is easily accessible at the bottom of the hotel garden and we enjoyed a walk around the course. The York Parkrun is based there too... you can be at the start line in a matter of minutes and still have plenty of time to enjoy the tasty hotel breakfast afterwards as they serve until 11am! We walked to and from York Centre on Saturday, taking about 40 mins, and walked back to the station on Sunday too. Staff were very attentive throughout. A very pleasant stay! Collapse
