This is not the “York Marriot Spa Hotel”, it’s the “York Marriot Hotel” with a separately, franchised spa facility attached! Unfortunately, admittance to the gym, pool & spa facility appears to be open to the general public as long as they pay on the day. Most spa hotels we’ve previously experienced restrict to hotel/spa guests & annual fee paying members. A regular member told me the franchise started the “open house” policy a few years ago without consulting the fee paying members & it includes regular Wednesday evening swimming lessons for large groups of children which, in his words, is a nightmare he always avoids. The result was that during our stay, the small pool was always crowded &, as it was also half term, full of noisy, boisterous children. We don’t dislike children & have 4 lively grand children of our own but we don’t expect or appreciate this sort of disruption in a facility we’ve paid a premium hotel rate to relax in. We love Spa Hotels & visit them 3-4 times a year, usually for 3 nights but this was the worst spa hotel experience we’ve ever had. A gym/spa facility is one way a hotel can almost guarantee a 4* rating & so charge premium rates but, in this case, it was not worth the money we paid. On the plus side the large room had nice views over the hotel grounds with a big comfortable bed & a larger than average TV, the food we had in the Cast Iron Grill restaurant on our first night was also very good. Unfortunately, our disappointment didn’t end there, the hotel is rather tired in places & a list of other issues arose during our stay; • After a tiring 4+ hour drive, we arrived at 1pm to be told that we couldn’t check in until 3pm. I queried this & said I had advised our arrival time on the booking form as requested & we’ve found most hotels will work hard to accommodate this but I was told rather abruptly “3 pm is our check in time”! A “sorry sir, your room isn’t quiet ready yet, come back in an hour & we’ll see what we can do” would have gone down much better! We had lunch in the bar & did get into our room at 2pm which was OK but that initial, unhelpful attitude rather grated. Room cleaning is obviously required but check out time is 11am, does it really take 4 hours to clean & prepare a room? Clearly not! • The TV remote was missing, not a problem in itself but in our search for it, we discovered a lot of dust & detritus behind the bedside cabinets which clearly had not been moved for a deep clean in many months. This was reported to the manager on the first day & we expected it would be taken care of but it had still not been cleaned before we left 3 days later. • The toilet was badly stained under the rim & at the back of the bend, it had clearly not been bleach cleaned for some time. The bowl was also cracked under the rim at the back & the toiled seat buffers were disintegrating with age; not pleasant & a breeding ground for bacteria. • Black mould was apparent on the bathroom fan cowl. • The paper cup coasters provided had tea stains on them, clearly already been used. • No towel rail in the bathroom making it impossible to “save the planet” by re-using towels. • Poor quality toilet paper, looked as if it came from the £1 shop. • Despite booking a “Deluxe” room & using the spa facility every day, we were told we couldn’t have bath robes; apparently you only get these if you book an “Executive Upgrade” room. • Disappointingly, we found there were no, one hour time slots available during our stay for the massage treatments we usually like to enjoy. • No note paper or pen in the room, usually a given in a 4* hotel. Sorry Marriot, we won’t be returning to this hotel or any in the Marriot chain. Collapse

Lovely hotel, pleasant staff and comfortable and clean room. We stayed for four nights and ate in once. Only a couple of criticisms, 1. 12.5% service charge on the food bill was excessive to be honest and I really object to drinks being included in this as the mark up on the drinks means that, in effect you are being taxed twice. Secondly the gym was extremely small which would have been okay but there was so much equipment in there it felt quite claustrophobic. Other than that I would highly recommend this hotel for the facilities and convenience of location. Collapse

We love the leisure club staff however the staff at the bar are rude and uninforming, we come here two to three times a week because me and my partner are a member of the leisure club, we like to go for a coffee at the bar and last two times all I wanted was a slice of toast with a bit of butter on it and a coffee. I asked for the bill and they had only charged me for the coffee as toast is not on the menu and it’s only a slice, I came today asked for a coffee and the toast was really yummy last time so I asked for a slice again. £3.50 they charged me for a slice of toast, they put it under a portion of chips, at least bring me more toast if I’m gonna be paying £3.50 for it... or inform me ‘if it’s not on the menu we will have to put it under so n so’ £3.50 for a slice of toast that barely had any butter on it and the back was burnt! Never again I will be coming here after I’ve been to the leisure club and for all of you wanting to come here I wouldn’t order toast they will end up charging you £3.50 for a slice of burnt toast. Me and the mrs brought her mum and dad to York for the night before moving onto Whitby for the weekend. It’s the 2nd time we have stopped here, nice hotel, big and clean room, big Marriott bed, good location had to get a taxi into York the in laws aren’t as young as they used to be so walking in wasn’t a option, it was around £6 each way. We had a meal here for the 1st time in cast iron. The food was very nice and well cooked, the waiter looking after us made the night though. He was excellent made the mother in-law feel very special because it was her birthday, he even sang happy birthday to her. I didn’t see his name on his badge, I wanted to give him all the praise he deserves. I was hoping he was on at breakfast to have a look but he wasn’t. I hope the management see this and give him this feedback and employee of the month lol. He had short dark hair a bit of stubble/beard and he had a little stammer/stutter. 1st class service Collapse
