Truly disappointed with this hotel. Our first impressions were good, all the coming areas of the hotel are really nice. We arrived around 12pm and knew check in was not until 3pm but staff were helpful and our bags were stored and we were told we would get a text when the room was ready. Sure enough we did and it was only when we got to our room that it all went wrong! We had booked a Queen Deluxe room and I had called in advance to ask for a quiet room having read some reviews about noise from streets below. First glance the room was fine, it was very small but was fine. It was only when we sat on the bed and it sounded like it was going to break did we start to look around. The room was dusty, the bed base was ripped, the walls were badly scuffed, the lamps were all stained, the shower screen was broken and there was some odd yellow staining on the tiles. We called down to reception and asked to be moved as noisy bed aside, the dirty room was a no go. Alex the Assistant Guest Relations Manager came up and did agree the room was not up to standard and arranged for us to be moved but the only available room was not ready yet. We went back out in Edinburgh hoping that by the time we got back a new room would be ready. The new room was an upgrade with views of the castle, I believe it was a Premium room (424). It was our wedding anniversary and to be fair to Alex he had arranged champagne to be in the room as an apology and he had made an effort to resolve the issue. But again, the room was tired, the bed sounded like it was to split in two if you moved, the windows were falling apart, there was too much furniture in a strange shaped room making it feel smaller than it was. The wardrobe door opened halfway until it smashed into the ‘soft close’ function of main door (it didnt soft close at all), the safe didn’t work and nor did the speakers in the bathroom. Other small point but it annoys me, the towels were so small! The ‘big’ towels were half the size of a normal bath towel and the hair or hand towels were not big enough to wrap around your head. To be honest, we should have complained again but we were only there for one night and didn’t want to have to move rooms again. This room was clean which was an improvement but neither of the rooms were a Waldorf Astoria standard. There is clearly some update being done around the hotel which is good but they need a full room renovation ASAP because the rooms are truly tired. Big disappointment and we had high expectations considering the brand and reputation. For the price I would probably stay else where next time. Collapse

Check in process swift and friendly - lots of information and offers provided. We were upgraded to a larger king size room - very comfy. Hotel is full of character and although 'up market' you can still feel right at home in jeans and a t-shirt. We had afternoon tea in Peacock Alley on one day - perfect! Different sandwiches to the normal boring ones you get and scones were a mix of plain and orange and cinnamon (scrumptious). Also lots of pastries and as much tea and coffee as you liked. Not cheap but a delicious treat - we spent 2hrs there and still couldn't eat it all - they give you a take away box if you want to take the rest with you. Buffet breakfasts equally lovely - tons of choice of fresh fruit, cereal, fresh bread and sausage, egg etc too. Would definitely return. Collapse

We came to the Waldorf with a family friend and my one year old daughter for two reasons: the first was to have lunch and the second was to rubber stamp the hotel as a potential venue for their wedding. My companion's other half was running late so we decided to have tea while we waited. It took 20 minutes for our presence to be acknowledged - the two waitresses and "supervisor" on duty spent the time gliding around looking bored and moody. We were eventually asked what we wanted - we replied that a menu would be useful. I also asked for a high chair for my daughter because none was offered by the waitress despite the fact that - in the first and only gesture of friendliness - remarked that she also had a one year old son. My camomile tea came with an offer of milk - I mean seriously, a venue which offers any sort of tea product should know that milk is not taken with camomile! - and no high chair. Before I could ask again the waitress sloped off. I began the process of trying to pour my tea but, as it had been put in loose, in a teapot with a narrow spout which should only be used for fine-leaf teas, the large chunks of camomile became immediately lodged rendering the process futile. Whilst trying to dislodge said leaves, the lid of the teapot fell in as it had been put on backwards meaning I couldn't have any of the tea at all. We were there for a further 40 minutes throughout which no one came to ask us if everything was alright or if we wanted anything else. An hour later we were still waiting for a high chair, in fact the only thing that arrived quickly was the bill when we decide that we had no intention of having lunch in a place that couldn't even get the basics right. Having paid and commented to the waitress that the high chair never materialised and that the tea was served incorrectly - so much so that I couldn't actually have any - she immediately said that she would get the supervisor without trying to resolve the situation herself. 15 minutes later, when said supervisor clearly couldn't be bothered coming up to us, we left. We both noticed her earlier and we have to say that she didn't inspire any sort of confidence in either of us anyway - sour-faced and unfriendly, she seemed more concerned with having a chat with the other waitresses. The only smile we got all visit was from the doorman. Needless to say that after such a performance, not only did my companion completely discount the venue for their big day, neither of us or our friends and family will be back for so much as tap water. We had a lovely lunch nearby which was efficient, friendly and delicious and one couldn't help drawing comparisons between how a small, independent restaurant was run, versus how this element of your operation is executed. I notice that other guests have recently made similar comments on Tripadvisor about the Peacock Alley specifically so clearly there is a theme developing. The place had 4 to 6 people in at the time and no one was demanding much more attention than coffee and a biscuit. I don't know what training was conducted with the individuals concerned but they clearly didn't give a damn about providing even an adequate customer service. We all left stressed and irritated - on a side note, that is the worst service I received with regards to my baby since I gave birth. Every other place we have visited has bent over backwards to ensure that we had as stress free a visit with our infant as possible. We gave this feedback to the manager - Dale MacPhee- directly and they tried to buy us off with a free lunch. When we asked whether any effort would be made to improve the actual service via training etc we received no further response. Useless management, useless staff who will be the hotel’s downfall.
