Real service for the pet fee! Beds and toys for the dogs...just one sign of the way they make the experience special. The marble! The bar was gracious as well, allowing us to take our drinks back to room.

We had booked “The Long Weekender” package, and were expecting very much from one of the best hotels in Chicago. Upon our arrival, the bellboy was busy with another customer, and did not even greet us, when we took care of our luggage. Not a five star welcome. The lobby looked empty and sterile, no flower arrangements, or much furniture. We had requested for two eStandby Upgrades (extra charge), but nothing was mentioned at check-in. The Astoria Suite, which we had booked, had odd, kind of damp smell, which we didn’t like. I called the reception to inquire about the upgrades. “We will look into the matter, and call you very soon back”. We waited, and waited, so I called again. Received the same answer from guest relations supervisor as before. During the tasty dinner in Margeaux restaurant, I checked online the availability of the suites. As a luxury suite, for which we had requested an upgrade, seemed to be available, I went down to the reception. Guest services supervisor said “Yes, it is available, but for a different (higher) price point, and we cannot give it to you.” Our discussion become heated, as I felt cheated by the hotel. For me “subject to availability” means, if there is a room free, upgrade should be granted. Nothing about price point etc. was mentioned in my upgrade request form. At the end, the supervisor offered the upgrade and high floor request complimentary, and we accepted it. Luxury suite on the 25th floor was nicer than Astoria Suite. Straight view to 360 Chicago Tower, and some glimpse of the lake from the balcony. The in-room Nespresso coffee maker was fabulous to have in the mornings. Hotel seemed to be busy, but we didn’t hear any noise from the neighboring rooms. The suite was always cleaned very well, and the turndown service was good. Breakfast at Margeaux was nice, but pricey. Their standard coffee was awful. One should have paid even for a glass of orange juice which is one could expect to be complimentary on this level. On the Sunday morning, we were not treated nicely as the staff prepared for the brunch. Being a hotel guest didn’t seem to matter at all. Thus for the following mornings, we skipped the breakfast at Margeaux. Concierge booked us a table at Maple & Ash, a very good, modern steakhouse. Great experience. At check out, the room bill was incorrect. Someone had changed (to more expensive) the booked package after Friday evening, as the guest relations supervisor verified with me during the discussion the booked package and room rates. This should not happen in a Waldorf Astoria, which according to a city tour guide, is the best and the most expensive hotel in Chicago. It took quite a long time for the receptionist to sort that bill issue out. Luckily, I had a printed copy of our booking. Normally, hotels in this level, and especially a big chain hotels like Hilton, send immediately an online questionnaire to find out, how was the stay. This time they forgot us. Thus I am using Trip Advisor as a feedback channel. I did receive the corrected bill by email, so it was not the usual “wrong email address”. Would we stay again in a Waldorf Astoria? Sure these negative experiences left a bad memory, if not unforgettable. Collapse

Everything was superb from the moment we stepped into the Waldorf Astoria Chicago. The valet parking, front desk, the lobby, and to our suite. It simply feels like home with the fireplace and balcony. My wife and kids love the bedroom and bathroom. The carpet was soft to our feet and our robes & slippers for our kids were delivered as requested. We enjoyed dinning and shopping in the area around the hotel - surrounded by high-end shopping and great selections of restaurants. We ate breakfast the next day at the Margeaux Brasserie - the food and service were delicious and top notch. We had to move to a bigger table as my friend and her son joined us. Overall, you will have a great time at the Waldorf Astoria Chicago. It is a Can't Miss Destination! We love it so much that we're already thinking about coming back for another staycation. Collapse
Still an incredible experience!

I wrote a glowing review of the Waldorf Astoria the last time we stayed there, and our most recent visit matched our outsized expectations. This time we were there to treat ourselves to a weekend that included Hamilton and Second City, and the Waldorf provided the perfect home for a wonderful visit. This is a first class hotel in every respect. The rooms and common areas are immaculate. We love the drive-in courtyard, which gets you off the busy Chicago streets as you unload or reload your car (or rather, as their staff does it for you). And the service is the friendliest and most efficient you could ask for. We asked if we could borrow a couple of plates so we could reheat our breakfast from Tempo the next morning, and when we returned to our room we found two complete dinner sets, salt and paper shakers, catchup, etc. A small thing, perhaps, but indicative of how the staff tries to exceed your expectations, rather than just live up to them. The Waldorf's no-tipping policy is nice, not for the money it saves, but because there is no question that the staff are there to serve you, not to hold their hands out. And they do so with warmth, eagerness and a complete lack of snobbiness. The result is a wonderful, relaxed hotel experience that we hope to avail ourselves whenever we visit Chicago. Thank you, Waldorf staff! Collapse
